CALLAWAY JOINS CONWAY, LEADS FIELD AT CHEROKEE MOTORCPORTS PARK
RUSK, Texas - In the first rounds of qualifying at Cherokee
County Motorsports Park, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Lee Callaway and
Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Jimmy Jones took the No. 1 qualifying
positions in their classes.
Callaway took over the driving duties this weekend for the Tom Conway
owned and tuned Top Alcohol Dragster entry and outran the field with a
pass of 5.470 seconds at 248.02 mph. Callaway replaced reigning national
champion Steve Torrence of Kilgore, Texas in the drivers seat leaving
Torrence without a ride. There was no word as to why the driver change
was made.
Spencer Massey landed in the No. 2 spot with a run of 5.502 seconds at
252.76 mph.
Jones, of Cleburne, Texas, clocked in at 5.851 seconds,
248.75 mph and is followed by Ron Morrison of Oklahoma City with a lap
of 5.868 seconds, 246.11 mph.
In Comp Eliminator, it was Rodger Brogdon on top with a pass of 8.306
seconds followed by Alabama racer David Rampy in second.
Top qualifiers in other classes were Adger Smith in Super Stock, Fred
Henderson in Stock, Allan Firestone in the Reher-Morrison Top Sportsman
class, Mike Manners in TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster, and Ben Brown in
Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson.
Racing continues Saturday at 9 a.m. with Top Alcohol
Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars qualifying at 1 and 6 p.m. Gates
open at 8 a.m. Tickets are $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday. Cherokee County
Motorsports Park is located at 1157 CR 2404 in Rusk, approximately 40
miles south of Tyler, Texas. From 343 Loop, take the 725/241 exit.
