Goodyear Recognized by CIO Magazine as a CIO 100 Award Honoree

The annual award program sponsored by CIO magazine recognizes organizations around the world that exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology.

"Year after year, the CIO 100 award recipients serve as industry role models for business and IT excellence," said Abbie Lundberg, CIO editor in chief. "This year's winners are particularly remarkable for their ability to translate IT innovation into business value and solid ROI."

"The CIO 100 award recognizes IT's contributions in fueling Goodyear's new product engine," said Stephanie Wernet, Goodyear's vice president of information technology and chief information officer.

To shorten product development cycles and reduce costs, Goodyear now designs and tests tires virtually using a "massively parallel cluster" with hundreds of processors, a capability made possible through the company's unique partnership with Sandia National Laboratories. The result is Goodyear's rapid-fire launch of innovative new products, including its Assurance line of passenger car tires, new additions to its Fortera and Wrangler light truck and SUV tires, and the new Eagle with ResponseEdge and carbon fiber technology performance touring tire. Goodyear is the only tiremaker recognized in this year's award program.

"Computational analysis tools have completely changed the way we develop tires," said Joseph M. Gingo, Goodyear's executive vice president, quality systems and chief technical officer. "It has created a distinct competitive advantage for Goodyear, as we can deliver more innovative new tires to market in a shorter time frame."

While Goodyear has received numerous awards for its products, this marks the second time it has won an award for its product development process. Last summer, the company received the R&D 100 award from R&D magazine in recognition of the research and design work by Goodyear and Sandia National Labs in the development of the Assurance tire.

The focus of the CIO 100 changes annually to provide a vision of ever- changing business trends. Complete coverage of the 2006 awards will be in the August 15 issue of CIO magazine and available online at http://www.cio.com/ on August 15.

Goodyear manufactures tires, engineered rubber products and chemicals in more than 100 facilities in 29 countries around the world. Goodyear employs approximately 80,000 people worldwide.
