Utah's Edward Dalton Receives Energy Leadership Award in Washington, D.C.
Award given in conjunction with 17th Annual Energy Efficiency Forum
WASHINGTON, June 14 -- Utah educator and president of the National Energy Foundation (NEF) Edward Dalton was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Energy Leadership Award today at this year's Energy Efficiency Forum in Washington, D.C.
The award was a surprise for Dalton, who has devoted himself to energy and environmental education for nearly 40 years. He appeared at the Forum to introduce the winners of the Igniting Creative Energy (ICE) challenge; an annual educational competition that challenges students to create entries that demonstrate an understanding of what an individual, family, or group can do to make a difference in energy use and the environment.
ICE is sponsored and funded through a grant by Johnson Controls, Inc., with additional support from the United States Energy Association (USEA). It is administered by the NEF.
The Lifetime Achievement award is made only in those years in which an individual has made a significant, continuing contribution to the development and stability of our energy sources and preservation of the world's environment through energy efficiency gains.
Dr. Dalton started his career as a high school science teacher. He served as president of the Utah Science Teachers Association and was the first coordinator of Utah's Energy & Man's Environment program. In 1985, he became president and CEO of the NEF. In this role he has continued to influence training and provide educational leadership, helping develop curriculums that provide a better understanding of energy, natural resources and the environment, and on training teachers in these curriculums.
This important work has resulted in a variety of teaching modules, guides, simulations, instructional posters, and other educational resources for teachers throughout the United States. Materials and projects of wide application include: energy and water debate projects, Energy Action Patrols, the Out of the Rock minerals education program, the Johnson Controls Academy of Energy Education program, the Living Wise and Water Wise resource action programs, EnvisonYour Future, and water and energy conservation, career education, forestry, mineral resources, and mining education materials.
The Forum is a nonpartisan event sponsored by the U.S. Energy Association (USEA) and Johnson Controls, Inc. that is designed to raise awareness of the technical, economic and political solutions available to improve energy efficiency. The theme of the Forum, "Energy Efficiency: The Path Toward Independence," highlights the growing awareness of energy's impact on the U.S. economy and security in today's world.
Dalton was one of 13 individuals honored with Energy Leadership Awards in conjunction with the Forum. The awards recognize current or former public officials in a variety of categories who have encouraged energy efficiency. A diverse executive council selects the award recipients.
