For Immediate Release
Mike Savage ? Mr. Consistency Races On at 2006 CORR Sportsman Opener
The 2006 Lucas Oil Championship Off-Road Racing Sportsman Series began
its season at the Langlade County Fairgrounds in Antigo, Wisconsin.
This year?s edition of the Mole Lake Casino Off-Road Championships had
blue skies and mild temperatures, a rare combination for this
traditional early June event.
In the off-season Mike Savage, the ultimate privateer racer, reworked
the entire the entire front section of the race, looking to improve
the truck?s handling. Thanks to the work of family members Brian and
Mark Savage, everything came together just in time for Rounds One and
Two.
Saturday ? Round One
During the brief morning practice, Mike thought the transmission
wasn?t shifting properly. Immediately the team decided to install the
spare unit. It took almost 3 ½ hours, but the crew got the truck to
the staging area just as the group headed for the track.
Mike Savage and his #267 Savage Construction, Kumho Tires, Phil?s Inc.
Truck Stuff, Ford F-150 started from the inside of row two.
At the drop of the green flag, the #217 of Dan Baudoux and the #297 of
Ben Wandasega battled for the lead with Mike Savage in hot pursuit in
third place.
On lap 3 Wandesega dropped back after battling with Baudoux for the
lead. This moved Mike up second place. While this was going on Ross
Hoek #210 was trying to grab second place from Mike. Several times
Savage and Hoek were running side-by-side. Each time Mike Savage was
able to hold him off. At the end of 15 laps, it was Baudoux first,
Savage second, and Hoek third.
Mike?s fastest lap time was posted on lap thirteen, 53.455 seconds for
an average speed of 53.877mph.
Sunday ? Round Two
This round Mike started on the inside of row 5. This would be a much
harder battle to get to the front.
At the start Baudoux got the corner first and quickly built a sizable
lead. This left Wandasega and Hoek to battle for second Mike still
fighting to get towards the front. On lap 3 Mike made it to fourth
place. With the top 3 trucks well out in front. On lap 5 Wandasega
broke a front spindle giving the final spot on the podium to Mike
Savage. At the finish it was Baudoux first, Hoek second, and Mike
Savage third!
?We battled with the big boys and kept them honest. The support of my
family is unbelievable. The tranny change Saturday morning was
incredible?. without Brian and Mark I couldn?t go racing. The new
tire Kumho designed just for CORR is awesome. It really made the
difference when the track started going blue and we started riding the
cushion.? ? stated Mike Savage.
The Round Two Mike Savage is in second place in the championship
standings, tied with Russ Hoek, just ten points from first place Dan
Baudoux.
Next Race ? June 24-25 ? Forest County Potawatomi Brush Run in
Crandon, Wisconsin.
