Maruti Udyog Clinches the 2006 UGS Asia Pacific PLM Excellence Award Grand Prize
Top Indian Car Manufacturer Reaps Major Benefits and Cost Savings From PLM Solutions
PLANO, Texas and SINGAPORE, June 12 -- UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced that it has named Maruti Udyog Ltd., India's largest car manufacturer, the Grand Prize Winner of its Asia Pacific (AP) PLM Excellence Award for 2006. Crompton Greaves Ltd., Pyung Hwa Oil Seal Industry Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Yanfeng Johnson Controls Seating Co., Ltd. are runners-up.
The AP PLM Excellence Award recognizes manufacturers in Asia Pacific that have achieved exceptional business success through the use of PLM software and services. PLM is becoming more prolific in Asia and a number of entrants participated in this year's fierce competition. Both Maruti Udyog and the runners-up articulated very clear business benefits which resulted in an extremely tight competition.
Maruti Udyog's entry was chosen for several reasons. * The company demonstrated the benefits of PLM across various functions in the lifecycle of a product, from engineering to manufacturing. * The company demonstrated a deep understanding of PLM, showing an evolution of thinking beyond classical engineering approaches to take advantages of PLM tools. * The company demonstrated significant, tangible PLM benefits affecting profitability in the capital-intensive automotive industry, inclusive of faster time-to-market, increased global and supplier collaboration, increased local content and product quality and reduced vehicle cost. * As a result of fully embracing PLM technology, the company is able to control and manage costs in the early stages of product development, which helps deliver a valued product to customers.
"The automotive industry is a highly competitive and costly one, and our PLM strategy offers us a key competitive advantage," said C.V. Raman, general manager of Engineering, Maruti Udyog Ltd. "Not only were we able to streamline our processes, control costs and decrease time-to-market to meet consumer trends and demands, but the new PLM solution has also enabled us to enhance value to our customers, hence increasing customer loyalty and satisfaction."
Entries were judged on several criteria -- the business challenges addressed by PLM solutions, the PLM solutions profile, the PLM benefit to the organization and the future plans for PLM implementation across the organization. The judging panel was comprised of experts in manufacturing and PLM field -- Satoshi Ezawa, president of MetaLinc K.K., (a Japan based representative of CIMdata); Dr. Michael Grieves, director of industry research, MIS Department, University of Arizona; Professor Beom-Sahng Ryuh, Chonbuk National University in Jeonju, Jeonbuk, South Korea, Professor Xinyu Shao, Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China, and Ron Close, vice president of marketing, Asia Pacific, UGS.
"UGS is seeing a greater number of Asian enterprises incorporate PLM solutions as a key business enabler that benefits the company, suppliers and customers," said Hans-Kurt Lubberstedt, executive vice president, Asia Pacific, UGS. "The growing sophistication and excellence of the UGS Asia Pacific PLM competition entries is proof of this, and UGS is proud to continue to support the adoption and evolution of product lifecycle management in the region. I would like to once again congratulate all of our winners, and all organizations which sent in entries of such high standards. UGS looks forward to even better results next year."
Maruti Udyog, along with runners-up Crompton Greaves, Pyung Hwa Oil Seal Industry and Shanghai Yanfeng Johnson Controls Seating, have been invited to present their success stories at the 2007 PLM World Conference scheduled to be held in Long Beach, Calif., April 23 - 27, 2007. This event is the annual user conference for individuals and companies operating within the UGS(TM) product environment and provides attendees with the opportunity to learn first hand about the future of PLM and UGS products directly from UGS representatives and other users from around the world.
