/Runner-up to KJ at Route 66 Raceway/*
JOLIET, Ill. (June 11, 2006) -- After running the quickest-ever elapsed
time for a Pro Stock car last evening, a pass of 6.620 seconds to win
the King Demon Crown, Anderson set his sights today on winning the Pro
Stock title and the $25,000 bonus from NHRA that comes with winning both
yesterday's King Demon Crown and today's NHRA CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals.
Anderson, who drives the Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac GTO for KB
Racing LLC, came up short, finishing runner-up to Kurt Johnson (KJ) --
No double up for Anderson.
KJ became only the second repeat Pro Stock winner in 2006. For Anderson
it was his 61st career final round. The Duluth, Minn. born Anderson,
who now lives in the Charlotte, N.C. area, has 40 career wins.
In the opening round Anderson turned back his former mentor Warren
Johnson (WJ). Anderson worked for WJ for 12 years as a crew member,
tuner and crew chief during four of Johnson's six NHRA Pro Stock
championships, before becoming a driver himself. It was Anderson from
start to finish, running an elapsed time of 6.658 seconds to 6.713
seconds for WJ.
In round two, Anderson was out first again. This time he was against
Allen Johnson, who got loose during the pass, possibly from tire shake.
Anderson cruised to a win light in 6.669 seconds.
Against Richie Stevens, Jr. in the semifinals, Anderson was handed a
free pass to the final round when Stevens left too early and saw the red
light. For the record, Anderson covered the quarter-mile in 6.644
seconds. Stevens recorded a 6.669 second pass, but all in vain due to
the foul start.
Good friend from Anderson's days with Kurt's father Warren, the
friendship between the pair stops at the starting line and resumes after
the race is over. In today's final round, KJ was out first at the green
starting light and then held off the hard charging Anderson down the
entire 1320 foot Route 66 Raceway track. Anderson crossed the finish
line in his Summit Pontiac in 6.641 seconds, .0333 of a second behind
Johnson, who recorded a run of 6.646 seconds in his ACDelco Chevy Cobalt.
As a result of today's final round, Route 66 Raceway continues to be one
of two tracks on the 2006 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series schedule that
Anderson has not posted a win, the other being Richmond's Virginia
Motorsports Park.
The three-time and reigning Pro Stock champion, Anderson maintained his
lead in the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock point standings, a position he has
held since the season-opening Winternationals.
It should be noted that Anderson's 6.620 pass in the final round of the
King Demon Crown, a special bonus race for only Pro Stock cars, is a
record that will only be good fodder for conversation, as it will not
count as a national record because it didn't take place as part of the
qualifying or elimination racing at the national event this weekend.
Next up for Anderson and the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series is the
second of three back-to-back-to-back races, this time at Old Bridge
Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., when the 37th annual NHRA
K&N Filters Supernationals is contested June 15-18.
ESPN2 will repeat the elimination show from the NHRA CARQUEST Auto Parts
Nationals early Wednesday morning (June 14) from 3-5 a.m. *Television
time is Eastern Time (ET) and subject to change at anytime. Check local
listings.*
