JOLIET, Ill. (June 10, 2006) -- The reigning and three-time Pro Stock
champion Greg Anderson showed why he still must be considered a favorite
for his fourth consecutive POWERade championship when he won the King
Demon Crown, a special event for Pro Stock drivers run in conjunction
with this weekend's CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals.
Anderson, 45, who was born in Duluth, Minn., and now lives in the
Charlotte, N. C. area, blazed the Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.,
quarter-mile in 6.620 seconds at 208.20 mph, the quickest elapsed time
ever recorded by a Pro Stock car.
In an all KB Racing LLC, Summit Racing Equipment final, it took all
Anderson had to turn back his teammate Jason Line, from Wright, Minn.,
who currently lives in Terrell, N.C., near the team's shop in
Mooresville. Line ran a pass of 6.637 seconds, just .004 seconds off
the national Pro Stock elapsed time record held by Anderson.
"That was the best drag race I've ever been a part of," Anderson said.
"I shoved it in high gear and peeked over and we were dead even. I
thought there was no way I could do anything else to get ahead because
he has the exact same stuff as we do. Somehow I crept ahead by an inch
or two in the last hundred feet.
"For Jason to have a light like that (a .017 second reaction time) and
run a 6.63 and still not win is cruel. He's become quite a driver and he
always races me tough. I think he just relaxes and has fun when we race
one another and that's what it all about. We've got work to do tomorrow
but we're going out as a team and celebrating this race tonight. We're
gonna spend some of that King Demon money."
For co-crew chiefs Rob Downing and Jeff Perley, who oversee the
operation of both Anderson's and Line's Pontiac GTOs, it was a win-win
situation.
It was an easy opening round for Anderson, who ran the quickest elapsed
time in the first round, defeating V. Gaines, who red lighted by .026
seconds. Anderson recorded a pass of 6.664 seconds at 206.89 mph.
In the semifinals, matched against Richie Stevens, Jr., Stevens got a
very small advantage at the green light but the power of Anderson's
Pontiac GTO proved the difference. It was a pass of 6.656 seconds for
Anderson to 6.701 for Stevens.
Anderson, who won the King Demon Crown in 2004 and was runner-up in
2003, collected $50,000 for today's work and is now eligible for the
$10,000 "double-up" bonus from NHRA should he win Sunday's national event.
For co-crew chiefs Rob Downing and Jeff Perley, who oversee the
operation of both Anderson's and Line's Pontiac GTOs, it was a win-win
situation.
To race in the King Demon Crown, racers accrue points based on their
qualifying position at each of the 23 national events preceding the King
Demon Crown event. A No. 1 qualifying effort is worth 175 points, down
to No. 16, which is worth 85 points. Drivers who do not qualify for an
event do not earn points at that race. The top eight point earners then
are seeded into the King Demon Crown eliminations.
Although Anderson's final-round pass in the King Demon Crown is the
quickest ever it will not count as a national record because it didn't
take place as part of the qualifying or elimination racing at this
weekend's national event.
