DETROIT, June 7 -- Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Chrysler Jeep Superstores Association President Jim Schebil announce the "2006 Chrysler Jeep Superstores Detroit APBA Gold Cup" unlimited hydroplane races July 14 - 16, 2006 on the Detroit River.
The Gold Cup is the oldest motor sports trophy in the world, as the Detroit River racing tradition moves into its second century. The unlimited hydroplane boats skim on the top of the water covering a football field in less than one second at more than 200 MPH with 3,000 horsepower engines.
