Highway Safety Leaders Demo Safe-Driving Measures for Summer
Travel
National Share the Road Safety Tour Visits Albuquerque
to Save Lives on Area Highways
On a typical day as many as 181,000 vehicles travel I-25 through
Albuquerque. Most automobile drivers are not aware of what
they can do to avoid crashes with tractor-trailers.
WHO: The American Trucking Associations (ATA), the New Mexico
Department of Public Safety Motor Transportation Division,
NMDOT Traffic Safety Bureau, the New Mexico Trucking
Association, and AAA New Mexico.
WHAT: A demonstration of highway safety measures for saving lives
on area roads during summer travel will be conducted for
local news media, including "ride-alongs" in tractor-
trailers, as part of the national Share the Road safety tour
visiting Albuquerque, NM.
WHEN: Thursday, June 8, 2006, 10:00 AM MDT.
WHERE: Balloon Fiesta Park, San Diego St., Parking Area J,
Albuquerque, NM (see driving directions below.)
SUMMARY: Professional truck drivers with millions of miles of
accident-free driving, ATA, law enforcement, and others will
demonstrate safety measures critical to saving lives on area
highways. A static demonstration with simulated highway
lanes will show how cars and trucks can get into crashes. A
professional truck driver will provide truck ride-alongs for
news reporters and photographers, providing tips on blind
spots, driving in construction zones, and safe stopping and
following distances. Four Albuquerque-based America's Road
Team Captains, part of a team of elite professional truck
drivers, will demonstrate life-saving driving tips. A state-
of-the-art tractor trailer will demonstrate to reporters
advanced safety technologies.
This safety advice is critical for New Mexico drivers
because:
* Around three quarters of all truck-involved fatalities are
inadvertently initiated by car drivers (Federal Motor
Carrier Safety Administration).
* 35% of all truck-involved highway fatalities occur in a
truck's blind spots (Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration).
* Watching this demonstration will help reduce accidents and
save lives.
DIRECTIONS: Take I-25 North to the Alameda Exit. Go left onto Alameda,
right onto San Mateo, left onto San Diego. Parking Area J
(Sumitomo) is on the right behind Honeywell.
