MT. LAWN HOSTS USAC TRIPLEHEADER WEDNESDAY; NEW WINNERS EMERGE MAY 31
INDIANAPOLIS – USAC drivers will hit the hardtop of Mt. Lawn Speedway in New
Castle, Ind. this Wednesday to continue the “Wednesday Night Thunder” series
for the Regional, Kenyon and Indiana Ford Focus Midget Car Series divisions
after making their initial feature appearances last week.
Scott Thoman (Regional), Zach Schiff (Focus) and Chris Windom (Kenyon) won
races on the 3/10-mile track last Wednesday, and all three are hopeful to
repeat when the series continues this Wednesday. Last week’s races were the
first time features were held for all three divisions at Mt. Lawn this
season, as rain interfered on May 10 and 17.
Thoman, driving the No. 88 Drinan machine, led all but the first two tours
Wednesday in Regional action for his first victory of the season, which
helped him extend his point lead. Thoman crossed the line ahead of Bryan
Clauson – who had chased Thoman from the back of the field after an early
race spin – Joe Liguori, Matt Maners and Travis Young. Thoman’s point lead
is now 82 over Young.
In addition, UMARA veteran Jimmy Anderson won a 50-lap Regional race at
Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Ill., a co-sanctioned UMARA/USAC Regional
event. Trailing Anderson were Steve Thinnes, Brian Olson and fast qualifier
Bobby Santos III, who came from the tail of the field in attempt to score a
$500 bonus.
Zach Schiff scored a dominating victory Wednesday in the Focus cars, beating
Tate Martz by several car lengths to earn his first career victory, which
came in the No. 5 Beast/Ford Focus. Schiff led the final 18 laps after early
leader James Robertson spun and hit the Turn 2 outside wall. Martz finished
second, ahead of Tony Main, Josh Clemons and Jim Mills. With the victory,
Schiff took the point lead.
Windom held on to a 30-lap Kenyon car victory, claiming the lead on Lap 21
from Sammy Imel and leading the remainder of the event. Following Windom and
his No. 71 Kenyon/Yamaha to the checkered flags were former series champion
Dakoda Armstrong, Imel, Kenny Biro and Jared Harris. Windom claimed a
one-point lead over Imel with the victory.
