BLOOMINGTON, IN (June 4, 2006) - No place is more appropriate for a memorial
to Sheldon Kinser than the famous red clay oval that is Bloomington Speedway.
Most fans remember Sheldon for the daring that he displayed on race tracks
from coast to coast. He raced on tracks from quarter mile bull rings in
sprints and midgets to mile dirt ovals in USAC champ dirt cars (now Silver
Crown) to the superspeedways where he competed with the best in champ cars.
The Sheldon Kinser Memorial is one of the premier sprint car races of the
season every year.
Most of the drivers who will be in competition on June 9, never raced
against Sheldon Kinser. In fact, it is likely that the majority of them
never saw Sheldon race. However, most drivers appreciate the history of
this race and the driver in whose honor it is run.
Of course, Kevin Briscoe cherishes his previous Sheldon Kinser Memorial
trophies; but he'd certainly like to add another to the two that he already
has. Bryan Clauson, Kent Christian, Kevin "Pup" Huntley all would like to
add their name to the prestigious list of Sheldon Kinser Memorial winners.
Four time Bloomington Speedway sprint car champion Derek Scheffel is back
in action this season driving the Hurst Brothers sprinter; and there is
probably no driver who would prize the title of "Sheldon Kinser Memorial
Champion" more highly than Derek. To improve his odds a little more, the
Hurst Brothers have just purchased a new chassis from Dick Briscoe.
Last year's Sheldon Kinser Memorial champion, Dick Gaines II, would certainly like to defend his title; however, it remains to be seen whether or not he will be recovered from the injuries suffered earlier this season at Eldora Speedway. According to Dick's crew chief, Darrell Tate, Gaines is expected to be cleared to drive around June 11. It seems likely that Gaines will not permit two days to keep him off of the red clay of Bloomington Speedway.
As if there weren't enough Bloomington Speedway regulars after the title, the USAC sprint division is idle on the ninth; and it is almost certain that a number of their stars will show up to try to grab the big money away from the local stars. Among the USAC regulars who can be expected to compete is Brady Short who won the sprint car feature here this past Friday night.
In addition to the sprints, the O'Neal Wood Products open wheel modifieds and the Tire & Wheel Centers super stocks will also be in competition that night. They will be running for $600 to win with proper decals.
Don't miss this great race. General Admission is only $15 (Kids 6 and under are admitted free and kids 7 to 12 are admitted for $5 when accompanied by a paying adult.) Pit admission is $25. Parking and overnight camping are free. Coolers are allowed; but glass containers are prohibited.
Pit gates open at 4:30 PM; and the grandstand opens at 5:30 PM. Hot Laps begin at 6:30 PM; and racing begins at 7:30 PM. BE THERE!
WCLS 97.7 & JD BYRIDER NIGHT
BLOOMINGTON SPEEDWAY FEATURES SPRINTS, MODIFIEDS, & SUPER STOCKS
ON FRIDAY, JUNE 16
BLOOMINGTON, IN (June 4, 2006) - The good folks at WCLS 97.7 and JD Byrider will be joining us for a great evening of racing on June 16. You never know what they will add to our evening of the finest in motorsports; however they are certain to make sure that we all have more fun. WCLS 97.7 keeps their listeners up to date on the action on the red clay. JD Byrider has provided quality used cars to many of our fans; and they provide the beautiful pace car that leads our racers around the track every Friday night.
By the time that June 16th arrives a good part of our season will be in the books. The drivers who have had good nights in the first six shows will be happily at the top of the points standings. However, they will not be deluded into thinking that they should be comfortable there. A position in the points standings can go bad with a bad outing; and the competitors know it. For that reason, they will race every Friday night as if it were the final race of the season. On the other hand, those competitors who have had a bad start to their season know that they can still recover if they do their job well.
Bloomington Speedway will feature sprint cars, O'Neal Wood Products modifieds, and Tire and Wheel Center super stocks. All three classes typically show up in force every Friday night. The full pits that are a trademark of Bloomington Speedway insure a lot of racing. A typical program includes 12 heat races, 3 B features, and 3 features. At some tracks, a program like that could run to the wee hours of the morning. However, Mike Miles and his able staff do everything in their power to keep the program moving. And, the competitors know that when it's their time to race, they'd better be in the staging area and ready to go. Consequently, most are there when they need to be.
We really never know exactly which competitors will be racing with us on a regular basis until the season is underway. However, we can generally figure on most of our top competitors from the preceding season to return as well as a large portion of the rest of last year's competitors.
The top ten competitors in this year's points are::
Sprint Cars: 1. Kent Christian, 2. Kevin Briscoe, 3. Jon Stanbrough, 3. Kenny Carmichael, Sr., 5. Derek Scheffel, 6. Kenny Carmichael, Jr., 7. Jared Fox, 8. Bobby Stines, 9. Steve Rone, 10. Chris Windom
O'Neal Wood Products Modifieds: 1. Jesse Cramer, 2. Ryan Thomas, 3. Kent Robinson, 4. Matt Boknecht, 4. Clint DeMoss, 6. Jeff Bland, Jr., 7. John DeMoss, 8. Ray Humphrey, 9. Greg Deckard, 10. Ralph Groomer
Tire & Wheel Center Super Stocks: 1. Jeremy Hines, 2. Joe Lucas, 3. Greg Kendall, 4. Gary Trammell, 4. Kevin Arthur, 6. Ben DuBois, 7. Greg Amick, 8. Winston Howel, 9. Jack Frye, 10. Troy Clark
Pit gates will open at 4:30 PM, the grandstand gates will open at 5:30 PM, hot laps will start at 6:30 PM, and racing will begin at 7:30 PM. General admission is $10 for this event (children six and under are admitted free to the grandstand when accompanied by a paying adult; and children 7 - 12 are admitted for only $5 when accompanied by a paying adults.); and pit admission is $20. Coolers are permitted; but glass containers aren't. Overnight camping is also permitted.
