Tough Day Leaves Franchitti with 14th Place Finish
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (June 4, 2006) - Dario Franchitti, driver of the #27 Klein Tools/Canadian Cub
car, was a victim of a late-race accident with Tomas Scheckter and finished 14th in Sunday's running of the
Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix. Franchitti dropped to 10th in the IndyCar Series driver championship, but
remains only two points out of seventh place and 33 points out of fifth.
Franchitti began the race in seventh position and held that spot when the entire field had to come in to
change from the rain tires they started with to the slicker, quicker tires used in dry conditions. It took Franchitti
little time to pick up spots on the field and he moved into third place on lap 16. As he made the pass moving
him into third, Franchitti hit a spot that was still slick and he slid into a gravel trap. By the time he was able to
return to the track, he was two laps down. As the race wound to a conclusion, he was bumped by Tomas
Scheckter as they entered turn one and Franchitti's day was over.
Scott Dixon won his first race of the 2006 season. Vitor Meira and Ryan Briscoe finished second and
third, respectively. Buddy Rice and Felipe Giaffone rounded out the top five.
The IndyCar Series returns to action on Saturday, June 10, at Texas Motor Speedway. The Bombardier
Learjet 500, the third IndyCar Series race in 14 days, will be broadcast live on ESPN at 9 p.m. (EDT). The race
can also be heard live by XM Satellite Radio subscribers on XM channel 145, the official home of the IndyCar
Series.
Dario Franchitti, #27 Klein Tools/Canadian Club Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"The Klein Tools/Canadian Club team started off very well. The track was drying off very quickly so we
switched to slicks (tires) and were making places up when I made a mistake at the top of the hill. We were
struggling for rear grip but I broke too late, lost the rear and spun into the gravel. If that wasn't bad enough, the
safety crew pulled me out and basically blocked me in. I was either going to crash into the wrecker or go
through the grass, so I went through the grass. At that point, I was two laps down so I was just trying to stay out
of people's way."
John Anderson, Team Manager, #27 Klein Tools/Canadian Club Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"These are the sorts of courses where everyone is going to make a mistake and unfortunately when the
car high-sided on the curb, the Klein Tools/Canadian Club team lost two laps and that really nailed us. Being
two laps down, it was difficult to get back in the hunt."
