SHIELDS, THOMPSON OUTLAST THE COMPETITION AT MISSION RACEWAY
MISSION, B.C. - Because of the ominous weather forecast for
Sunday, NHRA and Mission Raceway officials opted to complete eliminations of
the Lordco BC Nationals on Saturday. The race, which is the second of six
NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events on the Northwest division schedule,
kicked off on Friday. In the end, Duane Shields outlasted the Top Alcohol
Dragster field and Clint Thompson bested his Top Alcohol Funny Car
competitors.
Shields, who reset both ends of the track record with a
5.213-second, 274.13 mph pass during qualifying, beat reigning division
champion Steve Federlin of Oregon City, Ore., in the final. Boulder City,
Nev., resident Shields made a 5.273-second, 271.16 mph pass which eclipsed
Federlin's 5.447-second, 264.31 mph effort. Federlin was the No. 2
qualifier at the event.
On his march to the final round against Northwest Hitter Bucky
Austin, No. 4 qualifier Thompson, who resides in Klammath Falls, Ore.,
picked off Chilliwack resident Tim Nemeth in the opening round of
eliminations. In the semis, Thompson faced top qualifier, Brian Hough of
Junction City, Ore., and beat him, 5.677 seconds at 251.32 mph to 5.742
seconds at 254.59 mph. Facing Austin in the final round Thompson laid down
a 5.715-second, 251.39 mph pass that was more than enough to cover the
defending division champ who ran 6.080 seconds at 201.20 mph.
In Comp Eliminator, Adam Bowdish, Oregon City, Ore., beat Jirka
Kaplan of Calgary, Alb., and in Super Stock, Spruce Grove, Alb., resident
Don Thomas scored the win over Sean Cour of Bush Prairie Wash. Stock
Eliminator racer Cory Thompson of Abbottsford, B.C., switched on the win
light over Black Creek, B.C., resident Jim Mantle. Brad Plourd of Kent,
Wash., earned the trophy in Super Comp over Anthony Castillo, Grandview,
Wash., and in Super Gas, Rod Andreas, Gervais, Ore., was the victor, besting
Ross Childers of Gladstone, Ore. Super Street competitor Dick Williams,
Puyallup, Wash., beat Seattle's Fred Hoffman in the final and in Sportsman
Motorcycle, Dave Rathbun, Oak Harbor, Wash., defeated Jim Sibley, Edmonds,
Wash., and Top Comp's Todd Hoerner, Deer Park, Wash., joined them in the
winner's circle after beating Andy Morris of Olympia, Wash.
Northwest division racers head to Washington for the next NHRA
Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash., will
host the series June 16-18.
