!!! KAEDING WINS ONE FOR THE BOSS !!!

SHORT WINS FIRST OF THE SEASON

BLOOMINGTON, IN (June 3, 2006) - Last night Bloomington Speedway presented its first all open wheel program since the days of the NAMARS Five Crown Nationals. It was Steve Kinser's 52nd birthday; and Mike Miles had felt that Steve should celebrate the day at home racing against his National Sprint Tour competitors. Since Steve started as a non winged racer and since Bloomington Speedway is famous for its non winged sprint car racing, Mike decided to run non winged sprints on the same program.

It was clear that this program was going to be special long before a car put a wheel on the red clay. In fact it started Thursday evening when Steve hosted an open at his shop only a couple of miles away from Bloomington Speedway. Thousands of Steve's fans enjoyed his hospitality. Although there were a lot of local fans there to get their first view of Steve's shop. For many of them it was probably the first race shop that they had been able to visit. However, there was a phenomenal number of fans from all over the country who probably had to burn an extra day of vacation to come to Bloomington a day early to visit Steve's shop. This is just another example of Steve's popularity with the race fans.

Steve's father, the legendary Bob Kinser, was Grand Martial of the event. Bob and Steve made a few laps on the track together with the assembled fans on their feet and cheering. In truth, Bob has many more wins on the red clay than his famous son. He raced for decades and into his 60's, most of it three or more days a week. For most of that time, Bob Seldom raced outside the state of Indiana. After all, he worked all day as brick, block, and stone mason. Both Steve and his brother Randy occasionally with Bob to build a new shop; and they couldn't get blocks and mortar to Bob fast enough to keep up with Bob.

Prior to the start of competition Larry Crane entertained the fans waiting for the racing The stage was set for a great evening of competition.

It was Steve Kinser's night; and he won the race. However, he won the race as a car owner, not as a driver. Gary DuBois, crew chief for Steve's teammate, Tim Kaeding, must have had the setup just right by feature time last night. They were only ninth quick in qualifications, however, when it really counted, they had what was needed to place themselves in victory lane.

In qualifications Paul McMahan set quick time in Tony Stewart Racing's Bass Pro Shop sprinter. Jason Sides, Jason Meyers, Tim Shaffer, and Danny Lasoski made up the rest of the fastest five. The heat races were won by Jason Solwold, Kerry Madsen, and Nick Smith.

Paul McMahan and Tim Shaffer won the two heat races, while ,Bloomington's Kevin Huntley prevailed in the "B" feature.

When Rusty Nunn waved the green flag, McMahan jumped into the lead from his starting position on the pole. However, he only held the lead for the first two circuits before giving the lead up to Tim Shaffer, On the 11th lap Danny Lasoski passed Shaffer to take the lead; and he led the next dozen laps.

McMahan regained the lead on the 23rd lap and it looked as if he were headed to victory lane. However, as they came down to take the white flag Tim Kaeding took the lead away from McMahan. McMahan held on to take his fifth National Sprint Tour feature win.

  NON WINGED SPRINT CARS -

Because insurance rules would not let drivers under sixteen participate in this special race, Mike Miles announced that this race would not pay points; however, it did pay $2000 to win. A few of our regulars took a break; but many of them showed up race anyway. Kevin Huntley, Brady Short, and Kevin Briscoe competed both with and without a wing.

In preliminary non winged action, Jon Stanbrough, Hunter Schuerenberg, and Josh Cunningham won the heat races.

In the J.B. Salvage "B" Feature Jason Holt charged from his outside front row starting position when the green flag waved. Kevin Studley, who started on the pole, tucked in behind Holt and followed him to the checkered flags. Kerry Kinser and Kenny Carmichael, Jr. finished third and fourth respectively. Dave Peperak and Jared Fox battled for the entire distance for the final transfer spot; and Peperak prevailed.

Josh Cunningham and four time Bloomington Speedway sprint car champion started side by side on the front row of the feature; and, when the green flag waved, Scheffel took the lead. After and exciting duel with Cunningham, it seemed that Scheffel might be headed for his first feature win of the season. However, Jon Stanbrough was coming. On the sixth lap Stanbrough took second; and the following lap he passed Scheffel for the lead.

Brady Short had started inside of Stanbrough in the third row; and , on the tenth lap, he passed Scheffel to take second place. The following lap Short worked his way around Stanbrough; and they battled all the way to the checkered flags. It looked as if Stanbrough might take the win from Short during the closing laps; however, Short would not be denied his first win of the season. Jon Sciscoe, Kevin Briscoe, and Kenny Carmichael rounded out the top five.
