Marin County Drivers Top Qualifying in Wine Country
Classic
Jaguar Wine Country Classic Vintage Car Races
SONOMA, Calif. (IMMEDIATE RELEASE) - Marin County drivers
swept the front row on Saturday at Infineon Raceway during qualifying
for the 20th annual Jaguar Wine Country Classic Vintage Car Races.
Ross' Tom Byrnes piloted his 1962 Cooper to victory in the
seven-lap qualifying race for Group 5 (1956-1963 Formula Cars) over the
12-turn, 2.52-mile road course. San Rafael's Art Hebert took second
place in the qualifier in his 1963 Lola.
Byrnes, who served as the Mayor of Ross in 2005 and is now
on the town council, is looking for his second straight victory in the
Jaguar Wine Country Classic. He will start on the front row in Sunday's
10-lap feature, alongside Hebert.
"On the first lap (of the race) I got ahead of (Hebert), but
then he was able to pass me back," said Byrnes, 60. "I was able to get
past him again at Turn 11 on the same lap and stretch out my lead."
More than 250 competitors attempted to qualify on Saturday
in nine different racing groups, with Alamo's Peter Giddings taking the
pole position in Group 1 (Pre-war sports and racing cars to 1952), while
Monterey's Don Orosco was the top qualifier in Group 3 (1955-1960 Sports
Cars) in his 1958 Lotus.
Other Northern California top qualifiers included Monterey's
Doug Sallen (Group 6), Petaluma's Randall Smith (Group 7) and Redwood
City's Lawrence Bowman (Group 7).
Action returns to Infineon Raceway on Sunday, with main
events scheduled to begin at 12:40 p.m. There will be 10-lap main events
in nine groups. Gates open at 8 a.m., with warm-up sessions scheduled to
