FIRST ROUNDS OF QUALIFYING COMPLETE AT BIR'S LUCAS OIL SERIES RACE

 

            BRAINERD, Minn. - In the first rounds of qualifying at Brainerd
International Raceway's (BIR) NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, Top
Alcohol Dragster driver Jeff Hamelink and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Vern
Moats took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes.  The event will
run through Sunday and feature drivers in eight classes vying for points
leading to divisional and national championships.

A resident of Savage, Minn., Hamelink outran the field with a pass of 5.513
seconds at 257.87 mph.  No. 2 qualifier Randy Meyer of Olathe, Kan., clocked
in just behind Hamelink with a 5.518-second, 260.76 mph pass.

Moats, of Des Moines, Iowa, set the pace in Funny Car running by 5.674
seconds at 255.63 mph to put him ahead of Roger Bateman of Calgary, Alb.
Bateman ran 5.745 seconds at 251.20 mph.

In Comp Eliminator, Clint Sallee, Glendive, Mont., was the top qualifier
while in Super Stock Roanld Roddel, Sioux Falls, S.D., was in the No. 1
place.  Stock Eliminator racer Douglas McCue, Kearney, Neb., drove his '70
Camaro to the top of the field and Zimmerman, Minn., racer Jeff Lanoue was
the best qualifier in Sportsman Motorcycle.  In the division's Top Comp
class, Steve Schoenrock, Waseca, Minn., set the pace.

            Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at BIR.  Gates open
Saturday at 8 a.m. and qualifying and time trials continue at 8 a.m.
Eliminations are slated to start Sunday at 9 a.m.  

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series are $25 Saturday and $20
on Sunday.  A two-day ticket is $45 and includes camping.  Children 6 to 12
years old are half-price each day and kids 5 and under and under are
admitted free.
