FEDERLIN, AUSTIN LEAD EARLY QUALIFYING AT MISSION RACEWAY'S LUCAS OIL SERIES
EVENT

            MISSION, B.C. - Competition is under way at the Lordco BC
Nationals, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, where racers in
eight classes took to the quarter-mile in the first day of this three-day
event.  In the first of two days of qualifying, Top Alcohol Dragster driver
Steve Federlin took the No. 1 position and Northwest Hitter Bucky Austin set
the pace in Top Alcohol Funny Car. 

Federlin, the reigning division champion from Oregon City, Ore., outpaced
the field with a 5.379-second, 263.69 mph pass.  Boulder City, Nev.,
resident Duane Shields sits in the No. 2 spot with a 5.398-second, 269.54
mph run.  Mission residents Paul Julien and Leo Grocock are in the eight-car
qualifying field in the sixth and eighth position, respectively.  Bill
Edwards of Sumas, Wash., finished the day as the No. 5 qualifier.

Austin, a Fife, Wash., resident, slipped into the top spot just ahead of
Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore.  Austin ran 5.661 seconds at 252.24 mph
to Hough's 5.669-second, 256.04 mph pass.  Chilliwack's own Tim Nemeth is
currently qualified in the No. 6 place after running 6.137 seconds at 219.40
mph.

Richmond, B.C., racer Shawn Cowie leads the Top Comp field while Jirka
Kaplan, Calgary, Alb., set the pace in Comp Eliminator.  In Super Stock,
Harry Holton, Modesto, Calif., drove his '64 Barracuda to the No. 1 position
and Joe Sorensen, Woodburn, Ore., wheeled his '69 Camaro to the top of the
Stock Eliminator field.  

            Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Mission Raceway.  Gates
open at 7 a.m. each day.  Qualifying and time trials continue Saturday
morning at 9.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car participants
will have two qualifying run on Saturday, at noon and 3 p.m., and will run
first round of eliminations at 6 p.m.  With rain threatening throughout the
weekend, NHRA and track officials are not taking any chances on not
finishing the race and eliminations for all classes will start on Saturday
and continue on Sunday.

General admission tickets for the Lordco BC Nationals are $20 Saturday and
$20 Sunday.  A pit pass is $5 each day.  Children 12 and under are admitted
