Vincec turns up the heat in Hamilton
Three podiums including two wins in Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship
Stouffville, Ontario - June 1, 2006 – The second round of the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship took place this past weekend in Hamilton and Mike Vincec would be looking to make up some ground in the Formula Senior and Rotax classes at the Cameron Motorsports team home track. Mechanical problems dogged the young driver in the opening round of the series and he and tuner Brian Bettencourt had a plan to "get things done" at race two.
In Senior Rotax Mike qualified 4th and needed to have a good run in the pre-final. It was a tight race with Mike coming across the line in third which is where he would start for the final. In the final, Mike moved to second at the green. It would be a long 22 laps to the end and he would have a great battle going, closing in at times on the leader.
Throughout the race, Mike was watching for the place to make his move on the leader and with the last lap board out, he was setting up for a pass when the leader suffered a mechanical failure. Mike would take the lead with a good margin over second place. The win moved Mike into second overall in the class championship just 12 points back of the leader with four races to go.
In the premiere Formula Senior (ICC) class, the race was a battle right from the start with Mike taking the lead into corner one only to be forced to the outside. From the drop of the green it was a four-way fight between some very determined competitors. Numerous passes for the lead and wheel to wheel racing through the corners produced an exciting race and a very exciting finish with Mike coming home third and recorded the fastest TIME of the race. "It was a terrific race and Brian had the kart really hooked up," offered Mike. "The racing was very close – and exhausting with Sunday‚s high temperatures, but we kept our nose clean to make sure we brought the Cameron Motorsports CRG/Swedetech across the line." The third-place finish moved Mike up two spots in the standings. "We are sitting third going into Barrie, which as a temporary street course can be a tough track on everybody," noted Mike. "Our hope is to get to the top step and maybe have a few hay bales bite the competition."
Mike hit the track again on Sunday and would bring his Mosport F1-K kart across the line with a commanding lead setting fastest lap for this class as well. "Brian seems to have this one all figured out and he is putting an absolutely awesome kart out there for me to drive," said Mike. Two for two with wins in this class, Mike leads the championship and will be looking for a three-pete in Barrie.
The Barrie race which takes place June 23-25 is the jewel in the Sunoco Ron Fellows series and it marks the halfway point in the race calendar. There is a bit of a break until the next round but Mike, Brian and the Cameron Motorsports crew will be heading off to a couple of Snap On Stars of Karting events to compete in ICC. Mike currently sits third in the East Division championship.
Mike and BIG Racing would like to thank Pilot Race Gear, Cameron Motorsports, Mosport F1-K, The DecalZone and Level Ten Communications for their continued support and encouragement.
