New Jaguar XK Features Delphi Center Console Module

Delphi is Setting New Standard in Mechantronics Development With Jaguar

TROY, Mich., May 30 -- With its new XK model, Jaguar is ringing in a new era in modern sports-car design. From the outside, the XK's ultra-modern look and the use of innovative technologies such as the light aluminum body make the new Jaguar sports car stand out from the crowd.

Inside the XK, a further innovation is the center console module from Delphi Corp. The module flips open a new chapter in mechatronics technology.

Dominated as they once were by rows of buttons and switches, Delphi has now designed a one-piece instrument control panel integrating vehicle electronics and functions into a complete, all-in-one module.

This integrated central console module helps reduce complexity, makes on- board operation easier, and helps improve driving safety. The driver can concentrate better on the driving without being taxed by complicated and confusing switches and buttons.

The new Delphi central console module also provides the car designers with ample room for design freedom and allows for simple in-car installation.

Delphi is setting new standards in mechatronics development with Jaguar

This new central console module is a continuation of the shift to more robust, modular mechatronics systems and, in terms of multiple switch integration, represents an important step forward in the development process for Delphi.

Together with Jaguar, Delphi intends to further develop this branch of mechatronics. With the new technology, electronic functions will be integrated into control modules, bringing added value from the point of view of the customer.

The console module from Delphi integrates switch functions for the centrally mounted touch screen that allows for intuitive selection of climate, audio, navigation, telephone and vehicle personalization settings. The Delphi- molded panel also includes a variety of the company's switchgear for a second set of controls for the XK's climate control system, CD loader and player, and stereo.

Complexity is reduced through the elimination of multiple interfaces, with only one controller area network (CAN) serial bus utilized for high-speed data transmission

Delphi's broad range of expertise

The possibility of having a single supplier provide all of the switch functions in a single package is important to improving overall quality and ensures easier assembly and in-car installation. It also improves surface illumination, and helps create a general impression of design harmony.

The completed module also helps reduce customer logistics concerns, since the integration of numerous components is carried out in advance.

Delphi is scheduled to assemble approximately 10,000 integrated center console units annually for Jaguar, which will find their way to the automaker's state-of-the-art Castle Bromwich production facility located in the West Midlands, Great Britain. The new consoles are to be fitted as standard on all 2007 XK models.

The new Jaguar XK with the state-of-the-art aluminum technology that was first used in the flagship model of the Jaguar car range, the Jaguar XJ, is now available in cabriolet and coupé at all recognized Jaguar dealers.
