NHRA NORTHEAST DIVISION OPENER IN THE BOOKS

 

            READING, Pa - Two separate events, more than 700 race cars,
and the final champions were crowned Sunday night at the NHRA Lucas Oil
Drag Racing Series event at this weekend's NHRA Northeast Division
season opener at Maple Grove Raceway. 

In Sunday's eliminations, Sal Biondo topped the Comp Eliminator field
ousting Michael Hardee with a final round pass of 8.466 seconds at
149.85 mph. The Maspeth, N.Y., racer was first off the line and never
looked back picking up his first win of the year after a runner-up
finish at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals earlier
this month outside Atlanta.

            In Super Stock it was an all New York final with Michael
Iacono of Wading River, N.Y., holding off James Antonette Jr. of Valley
Stream, N.Y., running 9.845 seconds at 134.40 mph.  Raymond Skipper got
the win light in Stock Eliminator when James Perrone left one
one-thousandth of a second early giving the win to Skipper who went on
to run 10.617 seconds at 125.18 mph.

            Mike Robilotto took the trophy in Super Comp winning over
Marty Jones with an 8.899 second lap at 170.47 mph. Regis Lepage won in
Super Gas over Mike Sawyer and Lynn Hoosigian won in Super Street over
Mark Butler.

In the Foxwood's Top Sportsman class it was No. 1 qualifier Mike Gardner
taking the win over Donald Troy Sr. in 6.958 seconds at just over 200
mph.

            Eliminations for the Lucas Oil Drag Racing series premier
classes were run Saturday evening with a couple of upset victories
taking place. John Finke took out No. 1 qualifier Art Gallant in Top
Alcohol Dragster running a 5.284 second lap at 270.27 mph. Finke took
out series regulars Rick McPhillips and Jeff Bohr in rounds one and two
respectively.

            Mickey Ferro of Stamford, Conn., used a starting line
advantage in beating both the reigning Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion
Bob Newberry and 7-time Funny Car Champion Frank Manzo on his way to the
winner's circle. Ferro posted reaction times of 0.035 seconds (0.000 is
perfect) against Newberry and 0.012 seconds against Manzo in the final
round for the win. Ferro's 5.718 second pass, at 253.71 mph held off
Manzo's 5.710 at 256.11 mph.

            Northeast Division racers head to Lebanon Valley Dragway for
the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, June 30-July2.
