Handling Leaves Herta 20th at Indianapolis
SPEEDWAY, Ind. (May 28, 2006) - Bryan Herta, driver of the #7 XM Satellite Radio car, had major
handling issues during the initial laps of the 90th running of the Indianapolis 500 and had to settle for a 20th-
place finish. Despite the finish, Herta remains in seventh place in the Indy Racing League® IndyCar® Series
championship standings. He is tied with teammate Dario Franchitti and is only six points out of sixth.
As the race began Herta expressed concerns about the car being loose in traffic and it showed on
the race track. Only 25 laps into the event, he had dropped to 24th. After making a tire pressure adjustment
the team made another pit stop on lap 40 and changed the rear wing in an effort to increase grip. The move
dropped the team back 10 laps off the lead but improved the car to the point where it was competitive.
Over the remaining 400 miles, Herta climbed through the field, eclipsing several cars and gaining
valuable points in the championship standings.
Sam Hornish Jr. won his first Indianapolis 500 in the second-closest finish in the race's history. He
narrowly beat out rookie Marco Andretti to the finish line. Following Marco across the yard of bricks was his
father, Michael, who made his first '500' start since 2003. Dan Wheldon finished fourth and Tony Kanaan
rounded out the top five, putting three AGR cars in the top five positions and four in the top seven.
The IndyCar Series season resumes Sunday, June 4, at Watkins Glen International. ABC Sports will
provide live coverage of the Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix beginning at 3:30 p.m. (EDT).
Bryan Herta, #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"It was just a tough, tough day. Once we made some big changes to the XM Satellite Radio car it
was a lot more competitive, unfortunately it took a lot of laps to do it. It still wasn't fast enough but at least we
got in a position where we could run competitively again. I want to thank my guys for their hard work the
whole month long. I was really rooting for Michael and Marco there at the end. I really thought one of those
guys was going to pull it off and that would have made my day a whole lot better."
George Klotz, Team Manager, #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"We were running pretty good speeds toward the end in the XM Satellite Radio car but obviously it is
too late when you are running 10 or 12 laps down. I have to take my hat off to the entire XM Satellite Radio
crew. The guys really hung in there today and did what they could to salvage as many points and positions
as we could. It's no fun to run like this all day, but we hung in there and will be ready for Watkins Glen.
Congratulations to Marco. He did one hell of a job out there today."
