A Consistent KJ Qualifies Ninth in Topeka

Event: 18th Annual O'Reilly NHRA Summernationals

Day/Date: Saturday, May 27, 2006

Location: Heartland Park Topeka, Topeka, KS

Kurt Johnson completed a solid qualifying effort on Saturday, capturing
the ninth starting position for Sunday's final eliminations of the
O'Reilly NHRA Summernationals in Topeka, KS. In each of his first three
runs, Johnson posted a time that was quick enough to qualify, with his
6.833-second, 201.91 mph effort on Friday evening being his run of
record.

With the scorching temperatures and strong headwind on Saturday
preventing any major changes in Sunday's starting line-up, Johnson took
advantage of his two attempts to work on his hot weather tune-up as he
looks to score his first national event win at Heartland Park Topeka.

"We're pleased, but know we need to pick it up for tomorrow. It's a
good thing anytime you can make it down the racetrack four times in
qualifying without problems. It's given us a good baseline, letting us
see where we are running compared to our competitors.

"Our ACDelco Cobalt has actually been telling us what's going on. It's
shown us that it hasn't been a car problem, it's a clutch problem, so
we'll go with what we know works tomorrow. We'll make the suspension
the best that the car has been, using a combination we won races with
and adjust the clutch accordingly.

"We have a few changes to make in the morning, which I think will give
us a package capable of running with the front runners. We learned a
lot on our four qualifying runs, and now it's time to make it pay off."
