SAMAX - Lime Rock qualifying

Greg and Mark Wilkins have bettered their lap times every session in
preparation for Monday's Rolex Sports Car Series race at Lime Rock Park in
Lakeville, Conn. The Toronto father-and-son pair are rookies on the
1.53-mile road course, but they're learning the track quickly. Their task is
less complicated this weekend because the race will feature GT-class cars
only, without the Daytona Prototypes that usually share the track in Rolex
Series races.

 

Greg Wilkins qualified the No. 71 SAMAX/ Doncaster Racing Porsche 911 GT3
Cup car 14th on the starting grid with a lap of 57.521 seconds, at an
average speed of 95.756 mph. He will drive the first stint in the two-hour
45-minute race; Mark Wilkins will follow.

 

"We're still trying to learn the track and sort things out," Greg Wilkins
said. "Qualifying took place about the time we would have liked to have had
our second practice session. Mark ran a few laps in the first practice
session and I went out for two or three laps in the rain [Friday], so this
morning was really our first run at it.

 

"Mark dropped about a second and a half and I did about the same time
[Saturday morning], and in qualifying we dropped another second, so we're
definitely on the right track. I think the car's going to be quite good in
the race; it will be quite consistent. We have a shot at running a good
green race, so I think that will play to our advantage."

 

The No. 17 SAMAX Porsche, driven by Mark Greenberg of Boston and Ryan
Hunter-Reay of Boca Raton, Fla., didn't qualify on Saturday. The car is
being repaired for the race after Greenberg crashed in heavy rain during
practice on Friday.
