Hodnett Wins at SSP on Thursday Night
Hodnett Sets Feature Record With 13th Career SSP Sprint Car Feature on
Thursday Night
Newberrytown, PA (May 25, 2006) – It’s always difficult beating Greg
Hodnett, but when he gets the lead on lap 9 and the race goes non-stop, it nearly
impossible to beat him. Hodnett claimed Thursday night’s 25-lap sprint car
feature at Susquehanna Speedway Park in record fashion. He steered the Al
Hamilton-owned No. 77 around the speedway in 6:52.009, breaking Steve Smith’s
14-year mark of 7:00.59. In other action, Larry Hughes Jr. won the 25-lap
Xtreme Stock Car feature event. Kenny Johns was victorious in the 20-lap Xtreme
Rookie Rumber, Randy Kissinger won the 15-lap Legends Car feature and Joe
Thomas captured the Great American School Bus Race.
As for Hodnett, it was his third win of the year at SSP and 13th career
here. "I like it when races go non-stop," Hodnett said. "Some guys get tired
especially if the car isn't working right. Crew chief Tim Elwell had the car
perfect. It makes it a lot easier on the driver.?? Hodnett started 10th in
the 19-car field and was running in second to Alan Krimes by the fourth lap.
Krimes settled for a season-best second followed by Fred Rahmer, Chad Layton
and Bobby Weaver. Rahmer and Layton, both potential winners since Lance
Dewease didn't start the feature due to engine problems, didn't find it as easy
getting through the field.
Hodnett knew it was important getting to the front. "You never want to take
your time with guys like Fred, Chad and Lance behind you," Hodnett said.
"I think the key was getting up there quick, because the track was really
fast. Lapped traffic played a part for many competitors down the stretch, but
Hodnett had relative ease. Blane Heimbach settled for sixth followed by
Michael Carber, Craig Kee, Cody Darra and Cory Haas. Bobby Weaver and Rahmer won
heats for the 18 cars.
Larry Hughes Jr. captured the non-stop 25-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature over
Mike Goodwin, Matt Smith, John Hiden Jr. and Charlie Pensinger.
Randy Kissinger held off Jason Rochelle in the 15-lap Legends Car feature.
Joe Thomas set a 10-lap record (5:32.22) in the Great American School Bus
Race.
The next race at SSP will be tomorrow night, Friday night, May 26 with the
Trail Motors Super Sportsman returning to SSP along with the Late Models and
Street Stocks. There will also be a York Haven Auto Sales Mini Van Super
Oval Race.
The Sprint Cars return to SSP on Thursday night, June 1 with the One-on-One
Street Car Drags, Sprint Cars, Xtreme Stock Cars and Four Cylinders.
Gates will open for both the pit area and grandstands at 5:00 p.m. Warmups
begin at 7:00 p.m. with racing action beginning at 7:30 p.m. Race fans
