Alberici Completes GM's New Assembly Plant

LANSING, Mich., May 24, 2006 -- "General Motors' new Delta Township assembly plant has set a bold new standard for manufacturing design excellence, which will be copied by industries throughout the world," Paul H. Lemley, Senior Vice President of Alberici Constructors, declared here today. Alberici was the design-build contractor for the Delta Township project, constructing the body shop, general assembly, visitor center, administration building and ancillary support buildings totaling over 1.7 million square feet.

In formally turning over possession of the new Lansing plant to GM officials, Lemley stressed that the new plant was a shining example of "the unprecedented team work by GM and the construction trades to build an advanced 'lean' facility with maximum flexibility to accommodate quick model changes and future expansion needs."

Lemley highlighted a number of key plant statistics including:
  * Surpassed the project's aggressive safety target by working 1.2 million
work hours by the construction trades without a lost time injury
  * Local Lansing trade unions supplied the skilled workforce
  * The fastest GM assembly plant ever built
  * 19 months of construction time
  * $33 million in material were purchased locally
  * 75 percent of all construction waste materials were sent to be recycled
  * 14,000 tons of structural building steel procured during the height of
     the steel demand problem

Lemley said GM is realizing unique benefits from the design-build process: leaner construction with reduced cost; faster implementation and response to process changes; better overall control with a single design-builder and significantly enhanced safety control.

This design-build methodology, which compresses the construction schedule, allowed for a single-point of construction responsibility and a more agile construction that enabled GM to:

  * Reduce cost of manufacturing space
  * Allow for the latest possible incorporation of new technology into the
     vehicle
  * Rapidly adjust response capability for model changes
  * Manage safety for the entire site from a single-point of control
  * Accelerate implementation of tooling and final assembly
  * Reduce cost/burden on GM staff

"The Alberici project team met GM's goal of allowing for the most innovative process design changes," according to Lemley. "The design and build teams' processes provided early start dates for process tooling and conveyor contractors in key areas (body shop, etc). Although some work activities started late, all met or were improved upon in the critical milestones in the project's production."

The Delta Township facility will set new levels of "lean" in the use of resources, both during construction and in operation. Reduced power demand and water usage were at the top of GM's list of goals for the facility's low impact on the environment. The Alberici process allowed for the latest amount of product changes, while still having built the plant faster than ever before. Fast response by the design-build team allowed for rapid client approvals and process changes.

"Our hats are off to GM for having the vision to set a new global standard for large-scale manufacturing facilities. This facility was designed and built to operate with an unprecedented concern for the environment," said Lemley.

The design-build project team was led by David Calcaterra and Al Sprinkle. The key subcontractors included the John E. Green Co., Superior Swan Electric, Angelo Iafrate Construction Company, The James N. Gray Company, Universal Wall, Hillsdale Fabricators, MIG-Alberici and Ghafari Associates. This team partnered with the GM Worldwide Facilities Group achieving remarkable results for GM and the future of automobile manufacturing.
