!!! STANBROUGH TAKES KISS OPENER !!!

HINES TAKES FIRST FEATURE OF THE SEASON

RYAN THOMAS TAKES FIRST FEATURE ON BLOOMINGTON RED CLAY

BLOOMINGTON, IN (May 20, 2006) - Again this week the pits were full at Bloomington Speedway. There were 52 sprint cars, 31 O'Neal Wood Products modifieds, and 19 Tire & Wheel Center super stocks. The King of Indiana Sprint Series was opening their series on the Bloomington Speedway red clay this year. Of course they hadn't planned it that way. The series was to have opened last Friday night at Gas City I-69 Speedway. However, the same rain that washed out our Dirt Late Model Speedweek show last Friday night washed out the original KISS Series opener. They made up for it last night when 52 cars rolled off of the trailers to compete for that first KISS series feature win of the season.

The O'Neal Wood Products modifieds and the Tire & Wheel Center super stocks also rolled onto the track ready to give the fans a great show.

KISS SERIES SPRINT CARS -

The King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS) was scheduled to begin last Friday night at Gas City I-69 Speedway and end July 1 at the Terre Haute Action Track. Last night they ran at Bloomington. Between now and the finale at Terre Haute they will run at Lincoln Park Speedway (May 20), Lawrenceburg Speedway (May 27), Kokomo Speedway (June 18), and Paragon Speedway (June 24).

The 52 sprint cars were divided into six heat races which were won by Justin Marvel, Jared Fox, Jon Stanbrough, Derek O'Dell, Ted Hines, and Shane Cottle. Only the first three cars from each heat race transferred to the feature. Two cars were to come from each of the "B" Features; however, Tim Spindler apparently had motor trouble immediately following his second place heat race finish. This forced him to scratch; and it meant that the top three cars in the first "B" feature. Ryan Pace, Danny Holtsclaw, and Chris Windom transferred from the first "B"; and Matt Westfall, and Kenny Carmichael, Jr. transferred from the second "B:"

Shane Cottle and Kenny Carmicael, Sr. started side by side on the front row of the 30 lap feature. Cottle took the initial lead with Carmichael on his tail. Jon Stanbrough started fifth; but, when the fourth circuit went into the books, he was running third. Jon had already won two out of three features on the red clay this season; and it looked like he was going to be hard to beat last night too.

On the seventh lap Jon passed the elder Carmichael to take second. At the same time Dave Darland was moving up from his 12th place starting position to join in the fray. The following lap Darland got by Carmichael to take third. From that point until the checkered flag it would be a three way battle of the win.

Shane Cottle is a talented driver; but Stanbrough has been hot all season. He already had five feature wins to his credit going into Friday night's competition. It's beginning to look like the combination of Stanbrough and the Fox sprinter is likely to plague the competition all season. On the 21st lap Stanbrough passed Cottle to take the lead. Although Stanbrough had the lead, he was only a bobble away from returning to second place. However, Darland was coming too; and it soon became apparent that it would be about all Cottle could do to hold off Darland.

Four time Bloomington Speedway sprint car champion Kevin Briscoe was moving up to challenge Darland for third. As they came down to take the white flag, Briscoe put all of his laps of experience on the red clay to get past Darland to take third; and that was the way that they finished. Stanbrough had his sixth feature win of the season, his third win at Bloomington Speedway, and the KISS series points lead. The hot ticket might be to hide down the street from the Fox shop on race day, watch which way their hauler goes, and head in the other direction.

0'NEAL WOOD PRODUCTS MODIFIEDS -

In the O'Neal Wood Product modified division, Jeff Bland, Jr., Ryan Thomas, Ralph Groomer, and Nathan Voorhies won their heat races; and Matt Boknecht won the "B" feature. The redraw to align the feature put Richie Lex on the pole for the second week in a row; and Nathan Voorhies drew the outside front row starting position.

When the green flag waved to start the feature event, Richie Lex jumped into the lead from his starting position on the pole. Jeff Bland, Jr. started fourth; and, on the second lap, he inherited third when Nathan Voorhies rolled to a stop. When the green flag waved again, Bland passed Ralph Groomer to take second place.

On the fourth lap, Bland managed to get past Richie Lex to take the lead. He was followed by Lex, Ryan Thomas, Jesse Cramer, and Clint DeMoss. Bland looked as if he would cruise to an relatively easy win. Ryan Thomas passed Lex to take second place. Just before taking the white flag, Bland cut his right front tire, Car after car passed Bland's crippled mount. By the time he crossed the finish line he had fallen back to 11th. Thomas inherited the win followed by Jesse Cramer who passed John DeMoss to take second on the final lap. Thomas' win was his first ever on the Bloomington Speedway red clay.

Tire & Wheel Center Super Stocks:

Travis Howe and Kevin Arthur started side by side on the front row of the Tire & Wheel Center super stock feature with Greg Kendall and Troy Clark lined up behind them. Jeremy Hines started tenth; but he almost always runs well at Bloomington Speedway; and he would be a driver to watch. Howe took the point when the green flag waved and led the first lap before losing the lead to Kevin Arthur. By the end of the tenth lap Hines was running third. The following lap he took second. What followed. From that point on, a classic duel began which continue until the checkered flag signaled the end of the combat. On 14th lap Hines passed Arthur to take the lead. However, neither Hines nor Arthur ever had a comfortable lead; however, as they crossed the finish line, Hines had won his first Bloomington Speedway feature of the season by a few inches.

In preliminary action, Kevin Arthur, Greg Kendall, and Joe Lucas won the heat races.
