IHRA Standout Harold Martin Looks to the Future at the ACDelco High
School Nationals
Harold Martin and his ACDelco Pro Mod Pontiac Racing team will take time
to pay attention to drag racing's future this weekend, heading to
Norwalk, Ohio for the 18th annual ACDelco High School Nationals. This
single-day event has become an annual tradition at Norwalk Raceway Park,
with over 800 high school students from across the Midwest gathering to
compete for over $20,000 in scholarship money.
With an extended break in his IHRA eMax Drag Racing Series schedule,
Martin naturally looks forward to any opportunity to head to the
racetrack. However, even though his team and his 2,500-horsepower hot
rod will take to the track in Norwalk, their efforts will be not
centered on improving their performance. Instead, their primary focus
will be on mentoring the next generation of Real Car Guys, which is an
area of equally great importance to the "EFI Wizard".
"This will be my fifth year of participation in the ACDelco High School
Nationals, and what an honor it is to be requested to be part of such a
great and special event," said Martin. "This weekend offers us the
opportunity for us to be involved with our successors, allowing us to
meet and spend time with over 800 students who have great automotive
minds.
"We will be there to show them what it takes to dial in a car and
develop a consistent tune-up for eliminations. We will also reflect on
where they are in their career paths and gauge their overall interest in
an automotive curriculum and in motorsports, as well as to see the
tremendous effort they have put forth at such at an early stage of their
career.
"Another highlight of this weekend is being involved with the Bader
family and Norwalk Raceway Park. I have always enjoyed going to
Norwalk, which is a world-class facility, and showcasing our ACDelco Pro
Mod Pontiac. With so many cars on the race track using street tires, it
will be difficult for our hot rod to maintain grip, but hopefully there
will still be some rubber on the track early in the day that we can
capitalize on and make a representative run to entertain the crowd.
"Ultimately, however, this weekend is about networking and becoming a
part of the student body, and encouraging them to pursue their dreams.
I believe motorsports is a great foundation for young people to better
understand the relationship of success and the challenges that lie
ahead. Throughout the event, we will see a number of talented
individuals whose characteristics are incredibly similar to many of
today's great racers when they were at that stage of their lives.
"Another positive aspect to this weekend is that these students will get
to appreciate what a company like ACDelco is all about. Not only do
they produce a world-class product, but they are also committed to our
successors. I am honored to showcase both ACDelco's and Harold Martin's
commitment to have persistence over resistance and what dedication can
do to a career path. I look forward to being a guest speaker and
signing autographs this weekend, as well as working with the kids to
help them with their tune-ups, and to show them what the Real Car Guys
are all about."
