VIDEO from Medialink: Vehicle Crash Safety

--The "National Click It or Ticket" mobilization is May 22, 2006 through June 4 -- when law enforcement will be extra vigilant about safety belt use. With the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reporting that more people were killed on the nation's roadways in 2005 than 2004, using safety technology is more important than ever to stop that trend.

Car safety starts with buckling up. NHTSA analysis shows that 55 percent of those who died last year in vehicle crashes weren't wearing safety belts. Other emerging technologies could also help prevent fatal vehicle crashes:

-- Electronic stability control, such as StabiliTrak, helps prevent a crash by sensing where the driver wants to steer and where the vehicle is going. If the two don't match, it'll bring the vehicle back in the direction the driver intends.

-- Airbag technology has improved significantly, with many vehicles deploying airbags in milliseconds and virtually surrounding you in airbags during a crash.

-- New in-vehicle communications technology from OnStar relays to emergency personnel where and how hard your vehicle was hit in a crash, which helps them determine what emergency services are needed.

-- Seatbelts and the latest technology enhance your chances of avoiding a crash -- and surviving one should one occur.
