The Wild Child Doubles Up; Sandstedt and Yetman Capture the Checkers
Saturday May 13, 2006 – By: Rodney Rescott
New Lebanon, NY: The Wild Child, Andy Bachetti lived up to the hype, and
the nickname, as he put on a show in both the Big Block Modifieds and the
Benjamin Moore Paints 358 Super Series at the High Banks of Lebanon Valley
Speedway. Old Forge Powersports presented the action packed program in all
divisions.
A hardy crowd was on hand to witness the dominance of the #4 of Bachetti, as
he motored his way from deep in the field on the Big Block Modifieds to put
on a show for the fans. At the drop of the green, it was Dave Leckonby’s
Bert Transmissions #44 at the helm, but it wasn’t long till the first of
several cautions flews. But following each caution, Leckonby showed he had
the car to beat as he pulled away on the restarts. As the laps wore on, and
a few more short cautions came and went, the handle began to fade on the
#44. By lap 25, the race began to heat up as Donnie Corellis, Hector
Stratton, and the Wild Child were all there waiting to make their moves.
The #21 of Corellis was first to pressure Leckonby, which brought the #87 of
Stratton into the fray, but it was Bachetti, who was the man on the move,
and waited for the right opportunity, which came just three laps from the
end. Corellis tried the high groove to get around the #44, Stratton moved
in to block the bottom, But Bachetti made his own lane and made a 4 wide
pass for the lead in turn 4 with just 2 laps remaining.
The crowd was on their feet as the #4 Albreida Waste PMC powered his way
down the front stretch, and took over the top spot by turn 1. It was all
over from there. When the checkered flag flew, it was Bachetti crossing the
line 1st, 2nd was the Rifenberg #21 of Corellis, Leckonby finished 3rd,
followed by Stratton, and Ron Dwyer’s #88D.
The Benjamin Moore Paints 358 Super Series was also on tap. The usual
suspects made their presents known early. Donnie Corellis made his way to
the front early in the 24 lap event, and began to pull away. Charging
through the field was Bachetti, and the Mighty Matt Quinn aboard his #32Q
Bicknell. After an early race spin in turn 2, Quinn turned on the after
burners, and made the crowd take notice. But there was not enough time left
in the event, as Bachetti battled Corellis for the lead, and took over with
just 4 laps remaining. By the time Quinn got to third, it was too late.
Bachetti wins his 2nd feature of the night aboard his Old Forge Powersports
#4 with Corellis’ #21 crossing the line 2nd. 3rd was Quinn, followed by
Wayne Jelley, and Kenny Tremont.
Brian Sandstedt powered his way to the front of the 20 lap Sportsman
feature, taking over the lead from Danny Sanchez’ #63 after slight contact
on the backstretch with 2 laps remaining. At the checkers it was the #12,
followed by Jeff Watson. Art Collins driving the Lavoy Racing #3 was 3rd,
followed by Kyle Hoffman, and Chris Kokosa rounding out the top 5.
The full fendered cars were also on hand, as Rob Yetman takes his 3rd Pro
Stock victory of the season. Following Yetman across the line was the #24
of Robbie Speed, 3rd was Lori Carey. Rounding out the top 5 was Jason
Casey, and Jim Langenback. The Limited Pro Stocks saw Brian Keough return
to victory lane, the 1st for 2006. George Miles, nick Hilt, Justin Herron,
and Bob Gibson finished out the top 5.
The Pure Stockers also put on a fantastic show in their 4 events, with
nearly 50 cars on tap, the winners were: PS#1 Chris Stalker. PS#2 was
captured by Johnny Lane, while PS#3 was won by Tom Harkins. Pure Stock #4
was taken by Shannon McDermott, her 2nd win of ’06.
The action at the Valley of Speed returns next Saturday night with a special
event. Waste Management and Lebanon Springs Excavating present the CARQUEST
$3,000.00 to win Big Block Modified Spectacular. All weekly divisions will
be on hand, including a special 4 cylinder Demo Derby to cap the night off.
The Front Gates will be open at 5:00pm, and the action on the track starts
at 6:00pm.
