Marcelli takes first Formula Senior win
Kyle Marcelli wins headline class in season opener
GOODWOOD, ONTARIO – Kyle Marcelli had a fantastic start to his 2006 Sunoco
Ron Fellows Karting Championship season, by taking not only his first
Senior class win, but he won the series’ headline class, Formula Senior.
Marcelli’s mix of patience and speed paid off with a fantastic win.
Marcelli, who is also a 2006 member of Sunoco’s Team Ultra 94, was excited
about his first win. “First, Happy Mother’s Day mon,” Marcelli said. “I am
really happy to get this win,” Marcelli added.
Other winners on the day were Rui Teixeira in Canada Junior Light, Michael
Vincec in F1-K Senior, Kevin Monteith in Rotax Junior, and Andrew Deaves in
World Formula Senior.
Formula Senior
Pfaff Fast Qualifier; Curtis Fox
Curtis Fox led from start to finish in the pre-final. Fox built a lead
early and was never challenged. Behind Fox, Kyle Marcelli finished second,
while Rene Silva rounded out the top three. Brad LeLiever was fourth,
coming from eighth on the grid, and Richard Boake rounded out the top five.
In the final, Fox led early on before being overhauled by both Rene Silva
and Kyle Marcelli. Marcelli waited for his opportunity to take the lead,
and when the timing was right, he pounced. From that point on it was all
Marcelli, as he cruised home for the win. Second went to Fox. Third was
Chris Trombly, after original third place man Silva got tangled up with a
lapped driver. Rounding out the top five were Frank Launi in fourth and
Gianmarco Raimondo. Mike Vincec ended up sixth after starting from the
back. During the final, Vincec encountered some engine woes, but he
soldiered on to earn a good finish.
Canada Junior Light
Pfaff Fast Qualifier; Andrew Waring
Waring went flag to flag for the win over Reid Arnold in the pre-final.
Arnold battled his way forward from his fifth slot on the grid. Third went
to Ryan Klutt. The final proved to be a titanic battle between four
drivers. Rui Teixeira, Andrew Waring, Dylan Van Tienen and Ryan Klutt all
took turns leading at one point during the final. The drafting and some
very brave passes put on by all of the top four were amazing to watch.
Sadly, the final ended when an accident brought out the red flag. Teixeira
took the win over Waring, Van Tienen and Klutt.
F1-K Senior
Pfaff Fast Qualifier; Marco Di Leo
Marco Di Leo won from the pole, but behind him there was a great battle
between Michael Vincec and Matt France. The two were nose to tail until the
final corner, when France made his move. He drag raced Vincec up the hill
and across the line to finish second, with Vincec third.
In the final, Di Leo led for 29 plus laps before tripping over a backmarker
with two corners to go. This handed the win to Michael Vincec. Vincec was
followed by Jason France, Matt France, Philip Wang and Mark Woyslaw.
Rotax Max Junior
Pfaff Fast Qualifier; Cory Luciano
In an action packed pre-final, Cory Luciano won over Dylan Gibson and
Michael Lombardi. Luciano dropped back as far as third and battled his way
back to the lead, just a few laps before the checkered fell. In the final,
the battle was between Cory Luciano and Kevin Monteith. The two pulled away
from the rest of the field and passed each other numerous times during the
race. Luciano led going into the final lap, but Monteith executed a text
book pass in turn three to take the lead. Luciano came back at him on the
front straight but was unable to take back the lead. Joshua Korenyi came
home third.
World Formula Senior
Pfaff Fast Qualifier; Chris Holman
Holman went flag to flag to take the pre-final win over Adam Clarke and
Corey Usher. In the final, Andrew Deaves won by a scant .699 of a second
over Adriano Bilotta. Chris Holman finished third.
The Pratt & Miller Team Spirit award which is awarded to the team that
exhibits the highest levels of teamwork in the areas of presentation,
preparation and results, went to Reid Racing, and their driver Reid Arnold.
GM Racing award for outstanding skills went to Kevin Monteith based on his
two wins during the weekend
