Wilbur, Hoffer, Rochelle and Richcreek All Pick Up Their First 2006 SSP
Wins on Friday Night
Newberrytown, PA (May 12, 2006) – The hot starting spot of the night was the
outside front row as two out of the four feature winners started in that
position. Steve Wilbur won the non-stop Trail Motors Super Sportsman feature
event at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Friday evening. Joey Hoffer wired
the field to win the exciting Street Stock feature event. Jason Rochelle won
the Legends Cars event. Babe Richcreek picked up another career victory
for the Richcreek family in the Speedway Auto Sales Women on Wheels Mini Van
race.
The non-stop Trail Motors Super Sportsman 20 lap feature event was won by
outside front row starter, Steve Wilbur. Wilbur fell 0.59 seconds short of
breaking the old 20-lap track record held by Danny Hager from 4-16-95. The
eleven year old mark was 6 minutes and 31.00 seconds. The closeness to the old
mark is a testimonial to the lack of major changes to the rules over then
past fifteen years. Frankie Herr and Dave Calaman moved furiously through the
pack but had to settle for second and fourth places respectively. Both
drivers started midway through the field in eleventh and twelfth positions.
Finishing third was the heat race winner John Stehman. Tenth place started, Jim
Shuttlesworth also moved through the field to round out the top five. The
other heat race wins went to Wilbur and Herr. Ryan Rupp won the consolation
event.
Also from his outside front row starting spot, Joey Hoffer jumped into the
early lead and never looked back. Had he looked back he would have seen many
challengers throughout the entire 20 lap event. Joe Whitely and Brian
Hauenstein pursued the young Hoffer, but were unable to make the pass for the
lead. Both drivers had to settle for second and third place respectively.
Kory Sites and Chad Smith rounded out the top five positions. Heat race wins
went to Whitely and Chad Milliken.
The Legends Cars almost saw the third outside front row starter of the night
win the third feature event. Tim Tomson led the first fourteen circuits
before twelfth place starter Jason Rochelle made a last lap pace for the
victory. Tomson settled for second with Ronnie Dunstan in third. Stephen
Nederostek and Rodney Kistler came home fourth and fifth. A stellar field of 35
cars saw Greg Burd, Tomson and Randy Kissinger winning the heat races. Lawrence
Garrison won the consolation event.
In the 10-lap Speedway Auto Sales Women on Wheels Mini Van Race, Babe
Richcreek continued the winning ways of the Richcreek dynasty by picking up the
win. The late Butch Richcreek won several Street Stock championships and
feature wins throughout his Susquehanna Speedway career. His son, Butchy Richcreek
has carried on the tradition with 10 career Mini Van victories and now Butchy
’s mother has added her name to the SSP career winners list. Amy Crider
jumped out to an early lead and led the first seven circuits of the race. On
the eighth lap, Mean Aunt Helen overtook Crider and was passed one lap later
by Richcreek. Weaving in and out of lapped traffic at the end, Richcreek held
off Crider for the win with a hard charging Deanna Frye finishing third.
Mean Aunt Helen finished fourth followed by Melissa Deskin in fifth.
