GOODWOOD, ONTARIO – The fifth year of the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting
Championship presented by Toronto Star Wheels kicked off this past weekend
at Goodwood Kartways in Goodwood, Ontario. The weekend highlights included
some phenomenal racing action in all 11 classes, some first time winners,
and some drivers with terrible luck early on who battled back to capture
good results. “What we witnessed here this weekend was some very close,
very professional racing, by quality racing drivers,” commented ASN
Canada’s VP of competition, Paul Cooke. Cooke’s comments could be focused
on any one of the drivers in attendance.
On Saturday, the driver that made the biggest impact was Pearce Herder. Bad
luck followed him around until about 1:30 pm. It started early for Herder,
when he gave the wrong ‘passport’ for his Rotax engine. This oversight
disqualified him from the pre-final – which he had just won. In his second
class, Canada Senior, Herder arrived at the pre-grid too late and had to
start from the back. By the end of the day – and two stellar drives later –
Herder won Canada Senior and was third in Rotax Sr.
F1-K made its debut at Goodwood, and a good turnout for all three classes
was seen. Marco Di Leo should have won the Senior class, but an accident
with a lapped driver on the final lap handed the win to Michael Vincec –
who had been battling his own bad luck for most of the weekend. In the
Junior ranks, David Ostella came from last on the grid to win the final,
and the new Cadet class was thrilling as Anthony Furfari and Reid Arnold
battled for the entire distance with Furfari taking the win.
In the series headline class, it was a mix of talented juniors moving up,
taking on the established veterans of Formula Senior. Like last year, a
‘first time Senior’ made his mark. Kyle Marcelli is well known for his
speed and racing prowess, and he used all of it to capture his first Senior
class win. Marcelli is one of the Sunoco Team Ultra 94 drivers who will be
competing in the Bridgestone Academy F2000 series later this year, after
winning a spot on the team in the 2005 Evaluation Day.
The class winners were; Kyle Marcelli, Formula Senior, Rui Teixeira in
Canada Junior Light, Michael Vincec in F1-K Senior, Kevin Monteith in Rotax
Junior, Andrew Deaves in World Formula Senior, Marco Di Leo in Rotax Sr.,
Kevin Monteith in Canada Junior Heavy, Anthony Furfari in F1-K Cadet,
Joshua Korenyi in World Formula Junior, David Ostella in F1-K Junior, and
Pearce Herder in Canada Senior.
The Pratt & Miller Team Spirit award which is awarded to the team that
exhibits the highest levels of teamwork in the areas of presentation,
preparation and results, went to Reid Racing. GM Racing awards for
outstanding skills went to Pearce Herder on Saturday and Kevin Monteith on
Sunday.
The objective of the SRFKC is to help foster a professional environment for
kart drivers; help create a positive attitude towards appearance, conduct
and discipline; help foster the employment of the best practices for the
safe and fair running of competitions; and help kart drivers to move up the
