AAA Texas: Gas Average is Highest Monthly Average for this Year; AAA Texas: Monthly Fuel Gauge Report
HOUSTON--May 17, 2006--The statewide average price of self-serve regular gasoline is the highest monthly average this year, retailing for $2.855 per gallon, according to AAA Texas: Monthly Fuel Gauge Report.The nationwide average is at its highest point this year, retailing for $2.934 a gallon, 77.2 cents higher than last year's average of $2.162 a gallon.
"Motorists are more than weary of paying nearly $3 per gallon for gasoline and are looking for relief at the pump," said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "With oil prices falling below $70 a barrel this week and federal reports showing that demand has decreased, there is some hope that gasoline prices may have reached their highest level for the spring."
According to AAA, Hawaii has the highest average gas price in the nation at $3.40 per gallon. California and New York have the next highest average prices at $3.378 per gallon and $3.135 per gallon; respectively.
AAA Texas' Fuel Gauge Report is based on data from the Oil Price Information Service, the nation's most comprehensive source of petroleum pricing information.
