Cingular Wireless is Ready to Race With Two New Cell Sites in Darlington
New sites give NASCAR fans enhanced coverage on Race Day and beyond
DARLINGTON, S.C., May 9 -- Cingular Wireless, the nation's largest digital voice and data network, announced today that it is ready to roll with two new cell sites to serve its wireless customers -- in time for this week's 2006 Dodge Charger 500 at legendary Darlington Raceway. These two sites will provide Darlington residents and visiting race fans with enhanced coverage for their Cingular Wireless phones and data devices, allowing them to call friends and loved ones with race results, check out each driver's statistics via the Internet using their data devices, and even take and send their own "photo finishes" with their wireless phones.
"This race is enormously important to both Darlington residents and to NASCAR fans around the world," said Alison Hall, vice president and general manager for Cingular Wireless in the Carolinas. "By bringing these cell sites online in time for the race, Cingular hopes to help our wireless customers better enjoy the entire Darlington Raceway experience, and to communicate that sense of tradition and excitement to their friends and loved ones who can't be at the race themselves."
The first site brings enhanced coverage to the northwest side of Darlington, along N. Governor Williams Hwy. The second site enhances wireless coverage to the west of downtown Darlington, including Darlington Raceway, "the Track Too Tough to Tame." This second site is extremely powerful, able to handle extra call capacity during times of high call volume -- such as Race Day.
"We're always striving to give our customers the best wireless network experience possible -- whether they are calling from home, from the office, or even from the Infield of Darlington Raceway," said Hap Hall, director of network operations for Cingular in the Carolinas.
These new cell sites are just two of the more than 148 new cell sites Cingular will add to its South Carolina network by year's end. The company plans to invest more than $175 million in its network here, which translates into fewer dropped calls, improved call quality, new coverage where none existed before, and better in-building, in-car and pedestrian coverage.
