MADD Supports Inquiry Into Lawmaker's Crash

DALLAS, May 5, 2006 -- Statement for attribution to Glynn R. Birch, National President, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD):

On May 4, 2006, U.S. Representative Patrick Kennedy was involved in a traffic crash outside the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, DC. Fortunately, neither Congressman Kennedy, police officers nor others were hurt in the crash.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) supports the United States Capitol Police Department's decision to thoroughly review this incident and examine the Department's current procedures concerning crashes where impairment due to alcohol or drug use is suspected. We have great faith that the investigation will clarify the facts and determine appropriate outcomes of this situation.

MADD prefers to refrain from reaching any conclusions until the completion of a timely and comprehensive investigation of the incident. However, we are thankful that Congressman Kennedy realizes the importance of seeking treatment.

MADD recognizes the complex and difficult duties of the Capitol Police and appreciates their service to the community and to the nation. It is imperative that our nation's law enforcement agencies follow standardized operating procedures to ensure that officers treat everyone the same way. No one, including lawmakers, is above the law and law enforcement officers should administer field sobriety tests whenever they suspect that a driver is impaired by alcohol or drugs.

MADD supports law enforcement's ongoing efforts to serve and protect the public and is grateful for the many lives officers have saved.
