AIAM Supports Administration's Efforts To Improve Vehicle Fuel Economy

WASHINGTON, May 3, 2006 -- The Association of International Automobile Manufacturers (AIAM) today supported the request from Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta to provide the Department of Transportation additional legal authority to improve the fuel economy standards of passenger vehicles. AIAM, which represents international manufacturers that sell vehicles in the United States, reiterated its long- standing commitment toward fair, cost-effective fuel efficiency standards.

"Greater fuel efficiency must be a central tenet of America's energy goals," said Tim MacCarthy, President and CEO of AIAM. "Our members can provide American consumers with the vehicles they want that can also meet improved fuel efficiency standards."

As leaders in the production of fuel efficient vehicles and advanced fuel efficiency technology, AIAM companies have been at the forefront of hybrid vehicles and other advanced power train concepts. AIAM has also supported the recommendations of the National Academy of Sciences for reform of the structure of the CAFE program and believes it is possible to enhance fuel economy in ways that continue to meet consumer needs while maintaining and enhancing high levels of occupant safety.

AIAM supports a new rulemaking on passenger car standards by the DOT, so long as any proposed standards are competitively fair for all vehicle manufacturers, provide adequate lead-time for compliance, and are technically and economically feasible.
