Congressional Support Tops 100 for 'Right to Repair Act'

102 Sponsors Support H.R. 2048

BETHESDA, Md., April 27 -- Congressional support for the Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act (H.R. 2048) has reached more than 100 sponsors, it was announced today by Kathleen Schmatz, president and CEO of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA).

"This is a significant milestone in our efforts to obtain passage of right to repair legislation," said Schmatz. "Support for the bill continues to grow quickly as more and more members of Congress learn the facts about the bill. We want to thank these 102 legislators for their support of right to repair legislation and for conveying the importance of this legislation to their colleagues. Supported by a coalition of over 40 national and state organizations, passage of the 'Right to Repair Act' is vital to preserving the right of consumers to choose where they have their vehicles repaired. AAIA remains committed to either passage of the legislation through Congress or the development of an effective non-legislative agreement that ensures the aftermarket will remain competitive now and into the future."

The "Right to Repair Act", which was originally introduced by Reps. Joe Barton, (R-TX), Edolphus Towns, (D-NY) and Darrel Issa (R-CA), would require the car companies to make the same service information and tools capabilities available to independents service providers that they make available to their franchised dealer networks. Architects of the "Right to Repair Act" have added new language to clarify that car company trade secrets are protected unless that information is provided to the franchised new car dealer. The new language also clarifies the responsibilities of the Federal Trade Commission in enforcing the bill's requirements.
