BorgWarner Introduces the i-Trac(TM) Active Front-wheel Drive/All-wheel Drive Product Portfolio
New FWD/AWD Family focused on Stability/Traction and Handling/Performance
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 10 -- Global powertrain supplier BorgWarner has launched several new front-wheel drive/all-wheel drive (FWD/AWD) technologies to address specific areas of the expanding global FWD/AWD market. Its enhanced FWD/AWD portfolio, called BorgWarner's i-Trac(TM) FWD/AWD product family, is comprised of two subgroups -- Stability and Traction, and Handling and Performance.
"The 'i' in i-Trac(TM) stands for intelligent, integrated, and interactive -- all of which are important characteristics of BorgWarner's industry-leading active FWD/AWD technology," said Cindy Niekamp, President and General Manager, BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems.
"Our exceptional new i-Trac(TM) technology is only half of the equation," Ms. Niekamp said. "Active devices demand strong controls and vehicle dynamics expertise to exploit their full capabilities. BorgWarner has already made a substantial investment establishing core competencies in these areas. We're pleased to offer this expertise to our customers as we continue to attract more active front-wheel drive-based all-wheel drive business." Details of the individual systems are provided below.
BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems is a leading independent global designer and producer of torque management devices for all-wheel drive cars, SUVs and light trucks.
Auburn Hills, Michigan-based BorgWarner Inc. is a product leader in highly engineered components and systems for vehicle powertrain applications worldwide. BorgWarner's i-Trac(TM) Active Front-wheel Drive/ All-wheel Drive Product Portfolio i-Trac(TM) Stability and Traction Products
These products represent cost effective vehicle traction and stability and AWD functionality in combination with BorgWarner's leading controls and vehicle dynamics software.
The ITM 3e(TM) is unlike any other active AWD product. The design features a third friction element, which provides maximum torque transfer in a package size optimized to allow installation in smaller passenger cars and crossover vehicles (CUVs). It also combines best-in-class drag torque performance, which improves fuel economy. The ITM 3e(TM) was recently launched in the Hyundai Santa Fe and in the Chery Tiggo produced in China. A new North American CUV program and a European high-performance application will begin production later this year.
The NexTrac(TM) is an innovative, cost-effective technology that combines all of the features of the proven ITM 3e(TM) but promises less complexity, lower weight, and better noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance over its lifetime. These benefits are the result of NexTrac's(TM) evolutionary actuation design. This industry-first design meets or exceeds all of its original design goals and differentiates NexTrac(TM) from the competition.
i-Trac(TM) Handling and Performance Products
These products significantly influence vehicle handling by torque response, accuracy, and/or cross-axle control for enhanced performance in combination with BorgWarner vehicle dynamics control.
The T-Trac(TM) system is the only active twin-coupled driveline system on the market today that provides side-to-side traction without the use of a costly differential gear set. In conjunction with BorgWarner vehicle dynamics controls, the system's two active couplings can be independently controlled. This provides significant improvement in vehicle cornering, acceleration and stability.
Over 850,000 T-Trac(TM) units have been produced. They are found in vehicles such as the Acura MDX, the Honda Pilot and the award-winning Honda Ridgeline.
The PreEmptive Torque Management (PTM)(TM) system takes refinement and vehicle-level performance to new heights. Without a hint of wheel slip, the system can deliver up to 100% of available clutch torque with more accuracy than all other competing technologies. Combined with BorgWarner's vehicle dynamics controls, PTM(TM) can be tuned to provide a wide range of specific vehicle identities. PTM's low drag torque also provides outstanding fuel economy benefits and allows for two-wheel tow capability.
The E-Axle system allows for independent control of torque transfer to the rear axle while independently controlling side-to-side torque across the rear differential. Benefits include improved acceleration and stability, side-to- side traction capability, and an infinitely tunable vehicle identity.
The FWD eLSD system provides incremental vehicle capability over conventional FWD by actively controlling torque across the front transaxle. The system easily adapts to transmissions configured to accept a power transfer unit (PTU), and, as engines produce more horsepower, our FWD eLSD technology enables more of that available torque to be transmitted to the ground instead of spinning at one wheel. For customers disappointed with the intrusiveness of brake-based traction and stability systems, FWD eLSD delivers a more exhilarating, "fun-to-drive" experience.
