TAYLOR, GARDNER LEAD QUALIFYING AT SOUTH GEORGIA MOTORSPORTS  PARK

 

CECIL, Ga. - The first rounds of qualifying at South Georgia Motorsports
Park's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series are complete and Jeff Taylor is
leading the Comp Eliminator class while Mike Gardner set the pace in the Top
Sportsman category.  The three-day event kicked off Friday and will feature
drivers in eight classes vying for points leading to divisional and national
championships.  It is the fourth of six on the NHRA Southeast division
schedule.

Taylor, the reigning Comp Eliminator national champion from Floyds Knobs,
Ind., made a 9.008-second pass, running .702 seconds under his index.  The
No. 2 qualifier was Dick Maris of Valrico, Fla.  He ran his dragster 7.053
secondS, .515 seconds under his index.

Gardner, a Haymarket, Va., resident, covered the quarter-mile in his 2004
Grand Am in 6.938 seconds at 204.26 mph.  Jim Harrington, Fort Walton Beach,
Fla., was the second-place qualifier just behind Gardner with a
6.948-second, 203.19 mph pass in his 1999 Cutlass.

Jerry Silveus of Van Buren, Ohio, was the top qualifier in Super Stock,
making a 10.180-second pass in his 1969 Camaro.  In Stock Eliminator, Jimmy
Parker, Columbus, Ga., was the best qualifier in his 1991 Corvette.  He
posted a 10.875-second run.

            Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at South Georgia
Motorsports Park with gates opening at 8 a.m. both days.  Final qualifying
and time trials start Saturday at 10 a.m.  Top Sportsman will qualify at 4
and 7 p.m. and Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car are scheduled
to run at 5 and 8 p.m.  Eliminations start Sunday morning at 9.  Top Alcohol
Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at 1 p.m.
