Jason Line No. 1 at Houston
First of year, fifth of career
BAYTOWN, Texas (April 1, 2006) - Jason Line, driver of the KB Racing
LLC, Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac GTO, captured his first No. 1
qualifying position of the season and the fifth of his career at this
weekend's 19th annual NHRA O'Reilly Auto Parts National.
During qualifying, Line had what could arguably be called his best
opening day of qualifying in his Pro Stock career. It definitely was
the best of the young 2006 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
The KB Racing LLC crew faced conditions unlike any they have faced thus
far this season. It was hot and humid during Friday's opening session
of qualifying. By the time Line ran his Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac
in the evening session, the track had cooled down but the humidity was
near or at 100 percent.
In the opening run, Line covered the Houston Raceway Park track in 6.708
seconds, topping all challengers after one of four qualifying sessions.
Running in the final pair of pro stocker in Friday's second and final
qualifying pass, Line beat the atmospheric conditions running a track
record 6.689 second and continuing his hold on No. 1.
"The weather has been different than we're use to, but the team adapted
well to the changes," said Line following Friday's qualifying. "These
cars react differently the more water in the air. We haven't come up
with a foolproof way yet to combat the water, but we did pretty good
tonight.
"We've been running a RJ chassis this year and are just now getting use
to it. This Summit Pontiac GTO ran great tonight. Hopefully, it will
continue on through the weekend."
Line picked up where he left off on Friday, running a 6.717-second pass
at 206.35 mph in Saturday's first qualifying session. With three
consistent run under his belt, the Minnesota-born, North
Carolina-transplant entered the final session still leading the 20 other
drivers.
Line held off all other Pro Stock driver when he ran a 6.707 seconds,
which tied for second quickest of the final qualifying session.
"Anytime you can out qualify my teammate Greg Anderson and the rest of
the field, you've started the weekend out on a high note," said Line
following the end of the four qualifying sessions. ""We were lucky to
make the right run at the right time. We're in good shape for tomorrow
and should be able to run as quick as anybody else."
He will face Barry Grant in the opening round of eliminations tomorrow.
Grant, whose best run was 6.756 seconds, qualified in the No. 16 position
