WJ Opens Houston Qualifying in Sixth

Event: 19th Annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals

Day/Date: Friday, March 31, 2006

Location: Houston Raceway Park, Baytown, TX

The first day of qualifying for the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals
proved rather interesting for Warren Johnson and the GM Performance
Parts GTO Racing team. On his opening attempt, he powered through the
quarter-mile in 6.724 seconds with a top speed of 204.57 mph. He looked
to improve on that time in the evening session, and got off to a good
start with a solid 1.004 second sixty-foot time.

However, within moments, he found himself fighting for control, having
apparently hit some water that had been seeping up through the track
throughout the session. Although he was able to recover and record a
6.757-second elapsed time, his first attempt remained his run of record,
and placed him in the sixth position midway through qualifying. Even
so, he was fairly pleased with the day's results.

"We must have hit some water tonight, because it took an immediate right
when I put it in second gear. With the exception of that one spot, the
run was actually pretty decent. - even the clutch data looks good.
We'll see what conditions we'll have tomorrow, and keep working on our
tune-up. I believe we're on to something with our GM Performance Parts
GTO, and now it's just a matter of dialing it in."
