Cytec Named First Company to Qualify for the US EPA Sustainable Futures Program; Speeds Eco-friendly Products to Marketplace
WEST PATERSON, N.J.--March 30, 2006--Cytec Industries Inc. announced that it is the first company to qualify for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Sustainable Futures program which includes approval for a shortened regulatory review process for certain new products. As a result, the EPA's Premanufacturing Notice review period for Cytec's products assessed as low overall risk will be halved from the minimum of 90 days to only 45 days; increasing the speed at which products reach the marketplace."The biggest advantage of Sustainable Futures for Cytec is that the program encourages pollution prevention and the development of inherently low-hazard chemicals from the very beginning of the process," said Vice President of Safety, Health & Environment Karen Koster. "It steers our product development toward success right from the start and ends with a quicker, but no less stringent, regulatory approval process."
The US EPA's Sustainable Futures program is an approach that encourages pollution prevention in new chemical development through the transfer of chemical risk screening methodologies. Companies participating in Sustainable Futures receive the Pollution Prevention Framework risk screening methodologies to evaluate new chemical notifications under the Toxic Substances Control Act. Sustainable Futures participants also receive one-on-one technical assistance in the use, application, and limitations of the methodologies; expedited review for qualifying new chemical submissions and public recognition.
"We partner with our customers to solve their technological needs and by using the Sustainable Futures tools to screen out any negative components, we save our customers time as we get them the right product sooner," said Koster.
Cytec volunteered to participate in the program in December 2003. Cytec chemists received training on the Sustainable Futures tools and program requirements from the EPA. Then the Company conducted its own Sustainable Futures-based evaluations on Cytec's products before submitting the products for EPA review. After demonstrating proficiency in Sustainable Futures assessments, Cytec qualified for the shortened review process for future submissions in the low overall risk product category.
