Pelion Systems Sponsors Aberdeen Group's 2006 Lean Benchmark Study

Pelion Takes Lead Role in Powering and Sustaining Lean Value

BOULDER, Colo., March 27 -- Pelion Systems, a market leader in Lean operations management solutions, today announced it has sponsored "The Lean Benchmark Report: Closing the Reality Gap," by Jane Biddle of Aberdeen Group. Pelion's sponsorship and inclusion in the report supports the company's mission to work with customers to build demand-driven, synchronized operations that dramatically improve customer service, liberate working capital and lower operational costs.

"The Lean Benchmark Report: Closing the Reality Gap" provides insight into a key discrepancy between companies committed to Lean and actual Lean performance from the Global 5,000. While 90 percent reported that they are committed to Lean, their performance is less than Three Sigma on order fill rate, yield and on-time delivery. This poor scorecard can be attributed to the fact that 56 percent of companies are using paper or spreadsheets to manage their Lean initiatives.

On average, 82 percent of the respondents cited cultural change as the key adoption challenge. "A Lean technology framework is required to provide a consistent and repeatable change process that enables business leaders to power and sustain the Lean culture," said Kevin Fallon, president and CEO of Pelion.

Fallon continued, "Forward thinking companies realize this need as evidenced by the fact that twice as many respondents stated that they intended to use Lean Specialty/MES solutions during the next 24 months to power their Lean deployments than either ERP or homegrown approaches."

"Companies that capture the data generated from Value Stream Mapping (VSM) workshops to build electronic value streams can reap major rewards," the study cites. "For instance, a leading automotive components supplier captures its VSM data results in the Pelion Lean Operations solution, thus populating its production operation model. In addition to being 'execution ready,' this system enables the company to electronically represent a single version of the operating truth to the various value stream stakeholders."

The report continues: "This solution today has the data elements required to optimize Lean processes through load leveling, tying together various product 'pull chains,' and performing key calculations such as supermarket sizing."

"Lean manufacturing is a mainstream methodology for realizing a highly productive manufacturing operation," said Biddle of the study. "Companies like Pelion help drive and foster Lean success stories by providing the tools and expertise for manufacturers to adopt, sustain and succeed with Lean principles over the long term."
