Rampy ,Thomas and Edwards qualifying leaders after opening rounds at 
Bradenton Motorsports Park

BRADENTON, Fla. ƒ{ Bradenton Motorsports Park opened its gates today to more 
than 300 eager racers for the first of three days of NHRA Lucas Oil Drag 
Racing Series competition.
	The action today kicked off with qualifying in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock 
and Stock Eliminator as well as time trials in Super Comp, Super Gas and 
Super Street.  Competitors in the TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman 
Series, which runs in conjunction with NHRA Southeast Division events, also 
got their first shot at the track and will resume qualifying tomorrow at 
2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Adding to Saturday¡¦s action will be qualifying for the 
260-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars. The racers in 
those categories will get their shot at the Bradenton quarter-mile at 3 and 
6 p.m.
	 In today¡¦s qualifying, Comp Eliminator racer David Rampy of Piedmont, 
Ala., leads his field with a 7.308-second pass. Qualified in the second spot 
is Jimmy Stewart, of Edwardsburg, Mich. Stewart is followed by Valrico, 
Fla., racer Dick Maris, who is third.
Leading the pack in Super Stock, behind the wheel of his ¡¦69 Corvette, is 
West Chester, Pa., racer Dave Thomas. Claiming the No. 2 spot is Brian Oakes 
of Williamstown, N.J., followed by Donald Carpenter of Conway, Pa.
In Stock Eliminator, the leader is Dave Edwards of Washington Court House, 
Ohio. Jimmy Parker of Columbus, Ga., is second, while third is currently 
claimed by Bridgeton, N.C., racer Greg Rowe.
In TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series competition, Mike 
Gardner of Haymarket, Va., leads the field with a 6.831 second pass at 
205.66 mph. Qualified closely behind Gardner with a 6.832 second pass at 
196.67 mph is Ben Donhoff of Melbourne, Fla. In the third spot is Dewey 
Pedrick of Lighthouse Point, Fla.
Saturday¡¦s racing action will feature a pair of qualifying attempts for the 
260-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars at 3 and 6 p.m., as 
well as the continuation of qualifying in all other classes beginning at 9 
a.m.
Gates at Bradenton Motorsports Park open Saturday at 8 a.m. with qualifying 
set to begin at 9 a.m.  Tickets are $20 each day and include a pit pass. 
Children 11 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
