Malcolm Smith Motorsports Wins High-Tech Victory in Fight against Scrap Metal Theft

RIVERSIDE, Calif.--March 22, 2006--On the heels of the Press-Enterprise's recent report on rampant scrap metal theft ("Metal Thefts a Steal as Material is Easily Taken, Easily Sold" -- Feb. 2, 20067, 2006) comes a story of the triumph of security technology over wanton thievery. Last week, Riverside police officers apprehended two sets of criminals on consecutive nights with the help of high-tech surveillance.

Malcolm Smith Motorsports (www.malcolmsmith.com), a longtime Riverside institution, took extra measures to protect the construction site of its soon-to-open, 68,000-square-foot "MotorSport SuperStore."

"I knew the construction of such a large building would attract a lot of attention, particularly from thieves looking to steal copper, expensive extension cords or tools," explained Malcolm Smith, racing legend and owner/operator of the expanding motorsports dealership. "No one wants to be stolen from and keeping watch during the day isn't enough anymore. You need eyes on the building, 24 hours a day."

Smith hired Eye on Crime Enterprises Inc., a Southern California security company, to outfit the new store with high-tech surveillance equipment. The system monitors the building around the clock, recording visual, auditory, and motion-sensitive information.

"Someone hoping to rob or vandalize a building or construction site has virtually no chance of escape," commented Errol Johnson of Eye On Crime Enterprises Inc. "From the moment they step on the premises, we're aware of their presence, monitoring every move and alerting authorities accordingly."

Both sets of thieves chose to break in under cover of darkness. Police arrived almost immediately -- long before the criminals had the chance to collect the scrap metal and supplies they planned to steal. In both cases, the perpetrators were alleged to be under the influence of drugs. Malcolm Smith Motorsports plans to prosecute, sending the message that local businesses, through vigilance and a technological advantage, will stand up in the fight against robbery.
