Jack Perkowski to Address Society of Automotive Analysts on Opportunities in China
BEIJING, March 13 -- Jack Perkowski, founder and CEO of ASIMCO Technologies Limited, will address the Society of Automotive Analysts (SAA) on Wednesday, March 15 in Detroit, Michigan. The session, which will include other senior automotive executives, is expected to discuss a wide range of issues dealing with the Chinese automotive industry and the prospects for exports of vehicles and parts to the United States and other developed markets.
ASIMCO is one of the largest automotive components manufacturers in China. The company operates 18 plants in China, five of which were built in 2005 to meet growing domestic demand as well as increasing export opportunities. As ASIMCO Technologies begins the process of expanding globally from its China base, the company is establishing its presence in North America and Europe. The company operates three facilities in Michigan -- two former Federal Mogul camshaft plants in Grand Haven and a Livonia operation that produces components designed to reduce vehicle noise, vibration, and harshness -- and has recently opened an office in the United Kingdom.
"Our strategy is to focus on components, modules and systems which are used in both commercial vehicle and automotive applications, and to integrate the latest global technologies in our plants in China and to grow our business outside of China," he said. Perkowski's strategy is featured prominently in Thomas Friedman's best-seller, "The World Is Flat," as an example of integrating both China and US operations into a new paradigm of global competition.
Last month, Perkowski joined former President Bill Clinton, former Walt Disney CEO Michael Eisner and former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina as a speaker at the "Global Business Forum - Thought Leadership" in Australia and New Zealand attended by 600-700 senior corporate executives and government officials in each of the venues.
Perkowski told the Global Business Forum that cost and market factors in China are already impacting nearly every industry globally, but that the biggest changes are yet to come as the unique requirements of a large, fast growing China market foster innovation, ultimately disproving the conventional wisdom that the Chinese can copy but they cannot create.
"As China progresses from being the third largest automotive market in the world to its second, and ultimately its largest, the industry in China will be under enormous unprecedented pressure to create vehicles which are more affordable, more fuel efficient and more environmentally friendly," Perkowski explained to the audiences in Australia and New Zealand. "In this context," he went on, "China will be an early adopter and developer of new technologies, which as they gain scale in a large China market, might then set the standard for the global industry." The March 15 event will be held at the Westin in Southfield, Mich. Other speakers at the SAA event include Rudy Schlais, General Motors' former top executive in Asia and component industry veteran, John Harmer, COO of Geely- USA, a Chinese automaker that aims to sell vehicles in North America in the near future. The session will be moderated by Paul Lienert, president of
Global Auto Systems. Registration information is available at http://www.cybersaa.org/ .
