Electronics Giant Vestel Selects Freescale's i.MX31 Applications Processor for Portable Media Players; i.MX Platform Enables Fast Path to Next Generation Converged Mobile TV and Portable Media Player

HANNOVER, Germany--March 9, 2006--Vestel Electronics, a leading European electronics manufacturer headquartered in Turkey, announced plans to enter the burgeoning portable media player (PMP) market with its own product line, driven by Freescale Semiconductor's i.MX31 multimedia applications processor.

The new PMPs will offer an elegant video and audio mobile entertainment experience in a state-of-the-art ergonomic design. The result of months of engineering collaboration with Freescale, a prototype of the PMP with H.264 video and DivX VGA playback, along with DVB-H mobile TV support, is scheduled to be demonstrated at this week's CeBIT trade show in Hannover, Germany.

At the heart of the Vestel PMPs is Freescale's i.MX31 multimedia applications processor, which is fast becoming the preferred choice of leading mobile device manufacturers. Based on an advanced ARM11(TM) core and developed around Freescale's Smart Speed(TM) architecture, the i.MX31 processor has many features enabling product line differentiation without requiring significant engineering re-work. This enables OEMs like Vestel to rapidly deploy a variety of mobile multimedia devices with varying degrees of functionality and features.

"The high degree of adaptability in Freescale's i.MX applications processors for fast PMP feature enhancement and differentiation was the tipping point for Vestel. The i.MX platform supports our vision to quickly become a leading player in the market with a diversified product line," said Ugur Savas, Deputy General Manager of Vestel. "Freescale's expertise in Linux(R) portable devices and high quality engineering support, coupled with the strong consumer market presence of Vestel, really makes us confident that our collaboration will yield creative and exciting consumer mobile electronics devices."

Vestel's PMP players allow consumers to download with ease their favorite TV segments to view on the go. Movie buffs can enjoy their favorite films on the go with crisp video resolution and robust audio replay that mimics the big theater experience. Music lovers can also enjoy the richness and purity of concert quality audio whenever and wherever for hours and hours on a single battery charge, thanks to the i.MX31 processor's low power design.

"OEMs like Vestel are adopting the i.MX platform to drive innovation and quick market entry due to the product line's scalable performance, small form factor, low power operation and low bill of materials," said Denis Griot, Vice President and General Manager of Freescale in Europe. "In their new line of PMP devices, Vestel will leverage fully the many features of the i.MX31 processor to create multiple derivatives targeting different market spaces."

The flexible Linux environment architected by Freescale allows Vestel to expand the capability of the PMP and rapidly develop a large portfolio of models, starting in the first half of 2006. A DVB-H model, expected before the 2006 holiday season, will enable consumers to watch broadcasted shows on the go.
