Chevron Phillips Chemical Introduces New PPS Grade
New resin provides multiple benefits to automotive and appliance industries
THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (February 28, 2006) - Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) has expanded its Rytonâ polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) product portfolio by adding a new resin grade that provides superior hydrolytic stability over comparable glass and mineral fills. Rytonâ PPS R-7-220 is a 65 percent glass and mineral filled PPS compound developed for use in applications requiring constant or repeated exposure to high-temperature water and aggressive automotive fluids.
The superior hydrolytic stability of Rytonâ PPS R-7-220 results from the use of a proprietary fiberglass and other agents that enhance adhesion to the PPS polymer. The adhesion package is suited to withstand the high-processing temperatures of PPS, therefore minimizing the potential to generate gases, which coat molds and plug vents.
Additionally, Rytonâ PPS R-7-220 possesses other important mechanical properties. In a test with four competing resins, Rytonâ PPS R-7-220 outperformed all others by producing an ultimate tensile strength of 173 (MPa) and an ultimate flexural strength of 240 (MPa). The product boasts over 80 percent retention of these properties after 2000 hours of exposure to 140°C automotive long-life coolant.
"When we developed Rytonâ PPS R-7-220 we were looking to utilize the proven adhesion technology found in our highly successful R-4-220 to improve upon an existing glass and mineral filled grade," said Robert Goodman, Rytonâ PPS Product Manager. "Rytonâ PPS R-7-220 was specially formulated to address the stringent challenges the automotive fluid-resistant marketplace now requires."
Other beneficial properties inherent in Rytonâ PPS include excellent dimensional stability and good electrical properties. The resin's precision moldability and long-term dimensional integrity make Ryton® PPS an excellent fit for molding complex parts in tight tolerances with low warpage. Additionally, Ryton® PPS R-7-220 meets all the 200/220 C UL RTI and UL 94 V-O requirements characteristic of Chevron Phillips Chemical's Ryton® PPS product line.
Applications for Rytonâ PPS R-7-220 range from systems for automotive cooling to hot water heating.
Rytonâ PPS is produced worldwide by Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC and its affiliates. For more information about Rytonâ PPS R-7-220, call 1-877-RYTON66 or email Ryton@cpchem.com.
