Manteca's Scott Speed, America's First F1Driver since 1993, Featured on
Teleconference, March 1

 

            American Formula One driver SCOTT SPEED, A NATIVE OF
MANTECA, will be the guest on a United States Grand Prix teleconference
at 10:30 a.m. (Pacific) on Wednesday, March 1. 

 

            Speed, 23, will be the first American driver in Formula One
since 1993 this season with the new Scuderia Toro Rosso team. He will
compete in the United States Grand Prix on July 2 at the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway, becoming the first American to race in his home Grand
Prix since 1989.

 

            Speed began his open-wheel racing career at the Jim Russell
Racing School, which is based at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. Speed
captured the first Jim Russell/RACER Magazine Trophy in 2000 and had a
banner year in 2001, winning the SCCA Formula Russell Championship, as
well as being named Rookie of the Year. Speed was discovered at Infineon
Raceway in 2003 at the Red Bull American Formula One Driver Search.

 

            Since being selected to the Red Bull Junior Team in 2003,
Speed has won the Formula Renault German and Eurocup Championships, both
in 2004. He just completed a successful GP2 Series season in 2005,
taking third place overall. The GP2 Series is a feeder series to Formula
One. Speed was also a test driver for the Red Bull Racing Formula One
team in 2005.
