GM Engineer received 2006 "Asian American Engineer of the Year" award

Detroit, MI February 25, 2006; Dr. Yucong Wang, GM senior staff engineer was honored with the 2006 Asian American Engineer of the Year Award by the Chinese Institute of Engineers in Seattle, Washington, on February 25, 2006. Dr. Wang was recognized for his contributions to GM Engineering and his ongoing support to his local Chinese community.

Roderick Gillum, vice president, GM Corporate Responsibility and Diversity expressed, "Dr. Wang has made significant contributions to GM and the industry with his pioneering research in surface engineering. "

Dr. Wang thanked the Institute for the honor, and credited the success of his research to his fellow engineers. "I am grateful for the opportunity to help found the Technology Consortium of GM and Chinese Institutions for Materials and Tribology," he said. "Through partnerships such as these, we as engineers are able to work together for the greater benefit of the manufacturing industry worldwide and across all borders."

For the past 15 years, Dr. Wang has earned numerous accolades for his pioneering research on surface engineering and Tribology. Dr. Wang currently holds at least 30 patents for his inventions and has authored more than 60 technical publications. He received GM's Invention Award for 10 straight years, from 1993 to 2003, as well as a Certificate of Appreciation Award from the U.S. Department of Energy in 2002, ASM Fellow from ASM International in 2004, Herman H. Doehler Award from North American Diecasting Association in 2005.

Dr. Wang also dedicates much time and effort to his local community. He currently serves as the president of the Detroit Chinese Engineers Association and was a member of the Midland Chinese School Board. Dr. Wang also volunteered his services to senior citizens and the disabled in the Midland, Michigan area.

Yucong Wang earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Materials Science & Engineering from Shanghai Jiaotong University, China, and earned a Doctor of Science degree in Materials Science & Engineering from Michigan Tech, Houghton, Michigan. Dr. Wang also has a MBA degree from Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.
